A 17-year-old man, Ezekiel Burden, is on the run after allegedly shooting and killing 42-year-old Brandy Nicole Olson inside a North Carolina Walmart on Friday. Authorities believe the teenager acted to “incite fear,” as he fired the fatal shots in a crowded line at the retail store.

A Violent Act Amidst the Chaos

The incident unfolded in the Lumberton Walmart, a seemingly ordinary location that became the scene of terror. Olson, who was standing in line inside the store, was caught in the crossfire as Burden targeted two individuals at the Woodforest Bank. While they were the apparent targets, Olson tragically became an unintended victim of this violent act.

Police arrived quickly after receiving reports of the shooting, finding Olson on the floor with gunshot wounds as bystanders tried to perform CPR. By the time law enforcement reached the scene, the shooter had fled, leaving behind a trail of panic and confusion.

Burden is facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, discharging a firearm within an enclosed space to incite fear, and carrying a weapon in a manner meant to terrorize others. “It seems like they were trying to send a message, but no one could understand what it was,” said Robeson County Sheriff’s spokesperson, Lt. Maria Diaz. “We don’t have a full understanding of why this happened, but we are actively working on piecing the details together.”

As police continue their search, the community is left reeling. Olson’s boyfriend, Orlando Farrington, was waiting outside the store when he heard the gunshots. Rushing inside, he found the devastating truth.

“I couldn’t believe it was her,” Farrington said, his voice breaking. “I miss her. It feels like a nightmare I can’t wake up from.”

The couple had been together for several years, and Farrington’s grief is shared by Olson’s close-knit circle of friends and family. On Sunday, a group of her loved ones gathered at the restaurant where she worked, honoring her memory.

“She had such a big heart,” said Cindeee Oxendine, Olson’s close friend. “She’d do anything for anyone, and now she’s gone too soon.”
