King Charles III reportedly gave his eldest son, Prince William, heartfelt advice about marriage, urging him not to repeat the missteps of the past.
Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine, revealed that the monarch had a candid conversation with his heir, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing family over royal duty. “He told William, ‘There’s nothing more important than your family. Don’t make the mistakes that I made. I just did duty, duty, duty. I neglected my marriage, and look what happened,’” Seward shared in an interview.
This advice comes from a man whose own marital history has been anything but smooth. Charles’s turbulent relationship with Diana, Princess of Wales, and his long-standing bond with Queen Camilla, formerly Camilla Parker Bowles, have been well-documented. Their love story began in 1970, but royal obligations and societal expectations kept them apart. Charles married Diana in 1981, a union that crumbled under intense media scrutiny and personal incompatibilities. Their divorce in 1996 followed his admission of an affair with Camilla, who herself divorced in 1995. Diana tragically died the following year.
In 2005, Charles and Camilla finally wed, and the couple ascended to the throne together in 2023, following Queen Elizabeth II’s passing.
William and Kate: A Modern Love Story
Prince William’s relationship with Catherine, Princess of Wales, is often hailed as a royal success story. The pair met as university students in 2001 and began dating in 2003. Despite a brief breakup in 2007, their bond remained strong. They married in 2011 in a grand ceremony watched by millions worldwide. Together, they have three children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
Seward believes Charles’s advice has deeply influenced William, particularly in light of Kate’s recent health challenges. Earlier this year, the palace revealed Kate underwent abdominal surgery, during which cancer was detected. The 42-year-old princess announced in March that she had completed treatment and was cancer-free by September. Throughout this ordeal, William reportedly put royal duties on hold to support his wife and reassure their children.
“It’s been the toughest year of William’s life,” Seward said. “He’s had to be a pillar of strength for Kate while navigating his royal responsibilities.”
A New Chapter for Kate
Kate’s recovery marks a turning point, and the princess is slowly resuming royal duties. Her focus, she said in a public message, is on living with “an open heart, with love, kindness, and forgiveness.” This sentiment resonates in her annual Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey, an event she described as a celebration of empathy and community.
Seward praised Kate’s resilience, comparing her warmth and dedication to that of Princess Diana. “Kate has this incredible ability to connect with people,” she said. “She genuinely cares about making a difference.”
As Kate continues to prioritize her health, she’s taking a measured approach to royal engagements. “She’s following medical advice to rest and is only committing to what she can handle,” Seward explained. “Her focus is on her family and slowly easing back into her role.”
The Royal Family’s Future
With Charles now urging his son to balance duty with personal happiness, the royal family seems to be embracing a more modern approach to its responsibilities. William, Seward noted, is setting a strong example for his children by placing family first.
“He learned from his father’s regrets,” she said. “And that will undoubtedly shape the monarchy for years to come.”
