In a disturbing escalation of political violence, several prominent Democratic lawmakers and their families have been targeted with bomb threats and “swatting” incidents. These attacks, reportedly signed with “MAGA” in a chilling nod to Donald Trump’s slogan, have prompted urgent calls for increased security.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) confirmed the incidents Friday, warning that threats of violence are becoming an entrenched part of public life for elected officials. “We need maximum protection for all members and their families moving forward,” Jeffries said in a statement.

The threats have ranged from ominous warnings of pipe bombs planted in mailboxes to coordinated “swatting” hoaxes, where false emergency calls lead to armed police raids.

Connecticut Lawmakers Targeted

While Jeffries’ office did not name specific victims, several members of Congress have spoken out. Connecticut Representatives Rosa DeLauro, Jahana Hayes, and Jim Himes each confirmed they had received bomb threats.

“It’s terrifying, but unfortunately, not surprising anymore,” Rep. Hayes admitted in a somber statement Thursday.

In Rhode Island, Rep. Seth Magaziner revealed that his home was targeted. “We are safe, and no evidence of a bomb was found,” he assured constituents. However, he emphasized the emotional toll these incidents take.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, also from Rhode Island, disclosed he received a menacing threat over Thanksgiving, similar to those received by his colleagues. “The hostility is unprecedented,” his office remarked.

Trump Administration Nominees Also Threatened

The wave of intimidation isn’t limited to Democrats. Just days earlier, members of Donald Trump’s incoming administration were subjected to similar threats. Among the targets were Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, poised to become Secretary of Defense nominee Pete Hegseth, and Lee Zeldin, nominated to head the Environmental Protection Agency.

Trump spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt praised law enforcement’s swift action. “President Trump and the entire transition team are grateful for their response,” she said, without providing details on the nature of the threats.

A Dangerous New Normal

The rise in threats comes amid a stark increase in political violence. In 2016, the U.S. Capitol Police handled 902 threat assessments. By 2023, that number had exploded to over 8,000.

“I think honestly, it’s become part of what we all deal with,” a senior House Democrat told Axios. “Death threats and protests are far more common than many realize.”

Even Republicans are not immune. One House Republican admitted this was their “worst week of death threats ever.”

Despite investigations by the FBI and local law enforcement agencies, no explosive devices have been found in the recent incidents. However, many lawmakers remain skeptical about future safety.

Tennessee Rep. Steve Cohen expressed grave concern. “I’m not optimistic that we’ll turn the corner anytime soon,” he said. “Disrespect for public officials and civic institutions has grown in the last eight years. We need to be careful and vigilant.”

The U.S. Capitol Police, overwhelmed by the surge in threats, have ramped up security protocols. Checkpoints, armed patrols, and surveillance around lawmakers’ homes are becoming more commonplace.

Public Officials Under Siege

Experts warn that the toxic political climate is fueling a dangerous cycle of intimidation. As public trust in government institutions erodes, the risk of violence against elected officials continues to grow.

For now, lawmakers and their families remain on edge, caught in the crosshairs of a divided nation.
