In a dramatic twist that could shake Washington’s political landscape, an email from Pete Hegseth’s own mother has surfaced, alleging years of abusive behavior toward women.
Hegseth, a prominent Fox News host and President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense, is now at the center of a firestorm just as he prepares for Senate confirmation.
The email, written by Penelope Hegseth in April 2018, paints a damning portrait of her son. “On behalf of all the women (and I know it’s many) you have abused in some way, I say… get some help and take an honest look at yourself,” she wrote. “I have no respect for any man that belittles, lies, cheats, sleeps around, and uses women for his own power and ego.”
This scathing message was obtained by The New York Times and published late Friday, sparking outrage and raising serious questions about Hegseth’s character and fitness for office.
A Mother’s Accusation
The email was sent during Hegseth’s contentious divorce from his second wife, Samantha, with whom he shares three children. Penelope Hegseth did not hold back in her criticism of how her son treated his ex-wife.
“For you to try to label her as ‘unstable’ for your own advantage is despicable and abusive,” she wrote. “She did not ask for or deserve any of what has come to her by your hand.”
Penelope also referenced his first wife, Meredith, implying a pattern of mistreatment.
A Change of Heart?
Now, with her son poised for a Cabinet position, Penelope Hegseth appears to have walked back her statements. Speaking to The New York Times, she dismissed the email as an emotional outburst.
“It is not true. It has never been true,” she said. “I know my son. He is a good father, husband.” She further condemned the email’s publication as “disgusting” and out of context.
Trump communications director Steven Cheung quickly came to Hegseth’s defense. “The New York Times is despicable for using an out-of-context snippet of an illegally obtained private email exchange,” Cheung told The Daily Beast. “In subsequent emails, Mrs. Hegseth expressed regret for her emotional message and apologized.”
Allegations of Sexual Misconduct
This isn’t the first controversy to shadow Pete Hegseth. In 2017, he was accused of sexual assault by a woman he met at a Republican conference in Monterey, California. Hegseth admitted to paying the woman a settlement to protect his job at Fox News but denied the allegations, claiming the encounter was consensual. He was never charged.
The scandal didn’t end there. His second marriage dissolved after it was revealed he had been having an affair with Fox News executive Jennifer Rachet. The affair led to the birth of their daughter, and the couple married in 2019 at a Trump-owned golf course.
Political Fallout
For many conservative supporters, Hegseth represents a strong, unapologetic patriot who aligns with Trump’s America First vision. However, these revelations could complicate his path to the Pentagon.
Senate Republicans have remained mostly silent on the issue, though sources close to the leadership indicate they are watching closely. One senior GOP aide, speaking anonymously, said, “We’ll wait to see if more evidence emerges. But this isn’t helpful.”
With confirmation hearings expected in the coming weeks, the stakes are high. Hegseth’s defenders see the email as a smear campaign orchestrated by liberal media determined to derail Trump’s agenda. His critics argue it’s a red flag that cannot be ignored.
As the nation awaits further developments, the question remains: Will Pete Hegseth’s past—and his mother’s words—derail his future in Washington?
