MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski have ignited a storm among network staff and viewers after news of their recent meeting with President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago broke. For many on the liberal side, Scarborough and Brzezinski’s decision to sit down with Trump was nothing short of a betrayal.
An anonymous MSNBC staffer minced no words, branding the meeting as “cowardice” and accusing the hosts of “obeying in advance,” echoing the warnings of anti-Trump historian Timothy Snyder, a frequent guest on MSNBC. “It’s disgusting but frankly unsurprising,” the source said, speaking to Fox News Digital. “Scarborough and Brzezinski seem opportunistic. They’ve been harsh on Trump for years, yet here they are, cozying up to him.”
Others joined in, with MSNBC contributor Jennifer Rubin labeling the meeting “disgusting” on Bluesky, a social media platform gaining traction with progressive users. MSNBC host Katie Phang tweeted her disapproval, warning, “Normalizing Trump is a bad idea. Period.”
In response, the anonymous insider went further, suggesting the hosts may be jeopardizing MSNBC’s reputation with its left-wing audience. “Journalists don’t need access to those they’re covering to hold them accountable,” they said. “This is about access, not accountability. And viewers aren’t blind—they see through it.”
The backlash has reportedly sent shockwaves across MSNBC’s offices. Calls for a boycott have begun circulating among disillusioned viewers, who see the hosts’ actions as an unforgivable breach of trust. “This feels serious,” one insider admitted. “While Comcast might not be fazed, the MSNBC crowd is livid.”
Meeting ‘Not About Normalization,’ Defenders Argue
Despite the backlash, some at MSNBC defended Scarborough and Brzezinski’s decision, framing it as a challenging but necessary step to confront Trump face-to-face. One insider called the criticism “curious,” noting the hosts had pressed Trump on several contentious issues, including his rhetoric and positions on abortion and immigration.
“Going in to voice concerns isn’t wrong,” they argued. “If we’re to push for change, sometimes that means direct dialogue.”
Scarborough, appearing on Monday’s show, preemptively addressed critics: “We’re not here to normalize Trump,” he assured viewers. “We’re here to report and, hopefully, to give insights into these unsettling times.”
A Complex History with Trump
For many, this meeting underscored a dramatic shift in the hosts’ relationship with Trump. Once warm allies during the 2016 GOP primary, Scarborough and Brzezinski grew to become some of Trump’s loudest detractors. Friday’s Mar-a-Lago meeting was their first encounter in seven years, and the co-hosts were quick to emphasize the discord in their conversation.
“We didn’t agree on much,” Scarborough explained. “But we felt it was time to engage directly.” Brzezinski, too, defended the move, saying, “Five years of political hostility has torn this country apart. Talking with Trump, not just about him, may be our best shot at understanding half the country’s perspective.”
In response, Trump described the meeting as “extremely cordial” in an interview with Fox News Digital. “I appreciated that Joe and Mika reached out,” Trump said. “It was a positive discussion, and we agreed to keep communication open.”
Despite Scarborough and Brzezinski’s explanations, liberal viewers may be hard to win back. With MSNBC contributors and staffers voicing their fury, the network faces a potential reckoning over whether Trump is seen as a subject of accountability or opportunistic access.
