In a bold move, President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democratic Congresswoman from Hawaii, as Director of National Intelligence. But this unexpected choice is raising eyebrows — and hackles — on Capitol Hill.

At the heart of the controversy are Gabbard’s ties to a shadowy religious group known as the Science of Identity Foundation (SIF), a sect some former members claim operates like a “cult” with an extreme agenda and a near-messianic leader.

A Checkered History with the Science of Identity Foundation

The SIF, founded by the elusive Chris Butler, is no stranger to scrutiny. Described as an ultra-conservative offshoot of the Hare Krishna movement, the organization has a reputation for hostility toward LGBTQ individuals, Muslims, and women. Followers consider Butler, who lives in Hawaii, as a figure of divine authority, often calling him “God’s voice on Earth.” Members claim that questioning Butler’s word is tantamount to doubting God.

“I was raised to believe Chris Butler was infallible,” shared a former SIF member anonymously in a 2017 exposé. “Offend him, and you offend God.”

Family Ties and the Path to Power

Gabbard’s links to the group go deep. Not only did her political campaign benefit from members’ support, but she’s also related to notable figures within the organization. Her aunt, Dr. Caroline Sinavaiana Gabbard, has been openly critical of her niece’s association with the group. In a 2022 interview, Dr. Sinavaiana didn’t mince words: “Tulsi’s affinity for extremism is troubling. Her political aspirations seem motivated by Butler’s influence rather than any true principles.”

Reports indicate that Gabbard’s 2020 presidential bid was not simply a personal ambition but a directive inspired by Butler, who viewed her candidacy as a means of extending his influence.

The Marriage Link and Personal Devotion

Gabbard’s husband, Abraham Williams, reportedly met her while filming for her campaign, united not just by mutual interests but a shared loyalty to SIF. Their relationship, some speculate, may have strengthened Gabbard’s ties to Butler and his group, solidifying an alliance that has both personal and political ramifications.

Rising Political Backlash

As Gabbard’s name goes before the Senate for confirmation, criticism is mounting. John Bolton, former National Security Advisor under Trump, minced no words in a recent CNN appearance, calling Gabbard’s nomination “the worst cabinet-level appointment in history.”

“This is a test for the Senate,” Bolton added. “The American people deserve officials with moral integrity and professional qualifications. This vote should be 100 to zero against.”

Another former senior intelligence official was equally blunt, describing Trump’s choice as “a left turn and off the bridge.”

With Gabbard’s confirmation hanging in the balance, Trump’s gamble on this polarizing figure — with her cult-like affiliations — is proving to be a risky bet. And for now, the Senate’s decision could go either way.
