The power struggle for top positions in Donald Trump’s new administration is playing out in full view at his luxurious Mar-a-Lago Club.
Since his election victory, the Palm Beach resort has become a gathering place for key figures hoping to secure influential roles in Trump’s second term. The stakes are high, and the competition fierce. On Wednesday night, the VIP tables were buzzing with political hopefuls, all angling for a spot in the president-elect’s inner circle.
Notable faces included Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who’s reportedly being promised a role in public health despite his controversial anti-vaccine stance; Donald Trump Jr.; former CIA director Mike Pompeo; Tulsi Gabbard, and Tom Barrack, a major Trump ally.
Also in attendance were Trump’s transition co-chairs, Howard Lutnick and Linda McMahon, both of whom are deeply involved in vetting candidates for top positions. CNN’s Kaitlan Collins reported that Trump spent much of the night reviewing the names Lutnick had suggested, but it was clear the real work was just beginning.
Behind the scenes, senior Republican figures are scrambling to line up support and forge alliances. Some are working their connections via phone calls, while others are booking flights to Florida for a face-to-face shot at securing a role in the next administration.
Already locked in is campaign manager Susie Wiles, who’s been tapped as chief of staff. But the rest is far from decided. As Collins points out, Trump is eager to reward those who stood by him, even if they don’t always share his exact views. His decisions will be final, but alliances are critical.
Trump’s “ice maiden,” as some have dubbed her, will have a say too. Ivanka Trump, who has become more involved behind the scenes, is expected to wield influence over key choices, particularly in areas where family loyalty plays a strong role.
Among the names circulating for major roles is Elon Musk, who’s invested heavily in Trump’s campaign and may get a high-profile position overseeing a potential new “Department of Government Efficiency” — a nod to his business acumen and ambitious plans for reform.
Mike Pompeo is said to be a front-runner for Secretary of Defense, with former German ambassador Richard Grenell pegged for Secretary of State. Karoline Leavitt, Trump’s press secretary on the campaign trail, is also in the mix for White House press secretary.
And for the massive crackdown on illegal immigration, former ICE director Tom Homan is rumored to be tapped for the key role of overseeing deportations.
With all the intrigue and maneuvering, one thing is certain: the next few days will determine who rises to the top. And the best way to predict the next big move? Just check the VIP tables at Mar-a-Lago. Trump’s inner circle is taking shape, and the game is far from over.
