Nick Brown has done it again—this time not on a deserted island, but in the high-stakes world of politics. Known for his stint on Survivor: The Australian Outback, Brown, 47, has become the first Black person elected as Washington’s attorney general.

On Tuesday, November 5, he defeated Pasco Mayor Pete Serrano, a Republican, in a hard-fought race to succeed Bob Ferguson, now elected governor of Washington.

At a watch party held at the Seattle Convention Center, Brown stood before a crowd of supporters, vowing to champion “civil rights, abortion rights, and environmental protections” in his role as attorney general. “There is so much for me to build upon from the work that Bob and his team have done,” Brown said, determined to carry forward Ferguson’s legacy. “I plan on picking up that baton in the days ahead.”

His career trajectory has been anything but conventional. Brown first caught America’s attention on Survivor’s second season in 2001, finishing seventh in the competition. The former reality TV contestant has often spoken about how that experience shaped him, reflecting a spirit ready for “big decisions” and sudden course changes.

“I never aspired to be anything other than what I was on the path to being, but I loved the adventure and the excitement,” he told theGrio earlier this year. That willingness to take risks and step into new roles was on full display Tuesday night as he clinched a historic victory.

Brown’s rise to prominence reflects a career defined by ambition and persistence. After Survivor, he graduated from Harvard Law School in 2003. Shortly after, he joined the U.S. Army’s Judge Advocate General Corps and served as an Army lawyer in Iraq.

By 2005, he had returned stateside, building a strong legal resume as an assistant U.S. attorney, general counsel for former Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, and later, as the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Washington. Now, he steps into the powerful role of attorney general, responsible for defending Washington’s most critical rights and protections.

For Brown, making history as Washington’s first Black attorney general is personal. He’s openly shared his commitment to inclusivity and justice. “We’ve got a long way to fully be inclusive and to ensure that everyone’s voices are heard,” he told theGrio. “We need to make sure we’re not ignoring people who have been overlooked for generations.”

Washington is no stranger to groundbreaking leaders, and Brown’s journey reflects a story of persistence, passion, and readiness to lead.

Jay Inslee, will be the first Black top federal prosecutor in Western Washington, while Vanessa Waldref, an environmental lawyer for the DOJ, will be the first woman to run the U.S. attorney's office in Eastern Washington.
