A 66-year-old woman fell overboard from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship off the coast of The Bahamas on Tuesday night, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The incident occurred around 9:40 p.m. when the woman fell from the Allure of the Seas, about 17 miles north of Nassau. The U.S. Coast Guard is assisting the Royal Bahamas Defense Force in the search effort, deploying an HC-144 airplane and an MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter from Air Station Miami.
Royal Caribbean confirmed that the ship’s crew immediately initiated a search and rescue mission. “We are working closely with local authorities and providing support to the guest’s family during this difficult time,” a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said. “Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we have no further details to share.”
The cruise, which departed from PortMiami on Monday, was a Taylor Swift-themed voyage organized by Marvelous Mouse Travels, according to a Royal Caribbean fan blog. Around 400 “Swifties” had signed up for the special event, although it is unclear if the woman was part of this group.
Authorities have not released the woman’s identity or explained how she fell overboard. Passengers falling overboard from cruise ships, though rare, are not unprecedented.
In 2023, a passenger fell from Royal Caribbean’s Spectrum of the Seas while the ship was en route to Singapore. Earlier that year, another passenger went overboard during a journey from Australia to Hawaii, according to reports.
While the Coast Guard and local authorities continue their search, the incident raises concerns about safety measures aboard large cruise ships, especially given the thousands of passengers they carry at any time. Royal Caribbean, known for its entertainment-themed cruises, draws massive crowds to events like the Taylor Swift voyage.
