On Oct. 16, just four days before her 82nd birthday, Betty took a bold step: she voted for the very first time in her life.

Local news station Channel 2 Action News caught up with Cartledge on her way into a polling station in Newton County, an area just east of Atlanta. With a mix of nerves and determination, she told the reporter, “I’m going to vote for the first time in my life.”

Betty explained that her late husband, who passed away just last year, had long discouraged her from voting. “I was so young and everything when we got married, I never really thought about it.
