What should have been a night of spooky fun turned into a nightmare at an Oklahoma City Halloween bash early Saturday morning, when gunfire erupted, leaving one dead and 14 injured.
The horrific shooting took place around 12:30 a.m. at an event center near Southwest 59th Street and Agnew Avenue, according to local police.
Authorities revealed that the chaos kicked off after a heated argument between two groups escalated into a deadly shootout. With multiple shooters likely involved, the scene became an all-out war zone, sending partygoers running for their lives.
“Multiple people are detained. We’re going to interview them and figure out what led up to this event,” said Capt. Valerie Littlejohn, who has been at the forefront of the investigation.
As of Saturday afternoon, two arrests had been made, but police are still combing through witness statements, phone videos, and any other clues they can get their hands on to unravel the full story. “We still have a lot of witnesses to talk to and people to interview,” Capt. Littlejohn added.
Of the 14 people injured, two are fighting for their lives in critical condition. Local hospitals have been working around the clock to treat those caught in the crossfire. Sadly, the identity of the person killed has not yet been revealed.
Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt addressed the tragic event in a Facebook post, pointing out the troubling trend of young men making devastating choices with deadly outcomes. He emphasized the need for continued support for law enforcement but stressed the importance of investing in the city’s youth to prevent future tragedies.
“The most important thing we can do at the local level to prevent these tragic events is to keep investing in our young people,” Mayor Holt wrote. “When we cut the ribbon on a new soccer field, we’re not trying to create the next Messi. We’re giving young people an outlet… and data shows us that young people who stay in school and are engaged in extracurricular activities are far less likely to find themselves shooting each other at midnight.”
As the city grapples with this terrifying ordeal, questions remain: What caused the altercation to spiral into violence? And how can we stop our young people from turning to guns instead of solutions?
