Vladimir Putin has gone to extraordinary lengths to shield his private life from public scrutiny, cultivating an image of power and machismo while keeping the most personal aspects of his existence in the shadows.

But a recent report by the Dossier Center, a Russian opposition media group, reveals cracks in the fortress of secrecy surrounding the Russian president, offering an unprecedented look into the hidden world of his inner circle.

The report outlines how Putin, his rumored long-time romantic partner, former Olympic gymnast Alina Kabaeva, and their children live in isolation, shielded from the world in luxury residences. They travel exclusively by armored train, yacht, or private jet, with any visitors required to quarantine for two weeks before seeing them.

Putin has consistently projected an image of control and masculinity, often highlighting carefully curated aspects of his personal life. However, he has long concealed details about his family, only acknowledging two daughters from his previous marriage who live under assumed names. Meanwhile, his relationship with Kabaeva, stretching over a decade, has been an “open secret” in Russia, though he continues to deny the existence of their rumored children.

The Dossier Center’s investigation reveals that Putin and Kabaeva have two sons, Ivan and Vladimir Jr., whose existence has been kept so secret that they do not appear in Russian state databases. Their birthdates are known only to close family members.

The report suggests that Kabaeva and the children live in one of Putin’s lavish palaces in Valdai, where they are surrounded by a small army of staff—drivers, bodyguards, private tutors, and assistants—while their daily lives unfold in isolation.

“They do not attend regular schools or interact with other children,” wrote Ilya Rozhdestvensky, the report’s lead investigator. “They are ferried around the palace grounds by car, completely cut off from normal life, with rare interactions with their father.”

Even when Putin visits, Kabaeva is reportedly forced to watch from a hidden, opaque glass box as the president plays ice hockey with their sons, isolated from both the staff and her own family.

Despite these extreme measures to maintain secrecy, the Dossier Center’s report highlights notable security lapses. Photos of Putin’s sons posted by staff and guests on social media provided crucial details that helped corroborate the investigation’s findings. This exposure, combined with Putin’s surreal strategies to safeguard his personal life, suggests that the veil of mystery surrounding his family may be starting to fray.

For years, Putin has wielded his personal narrative as a tool for political power. But as more information about his private life comes to light, the contradictions between the image he projects and the reality he lives are becoming harder to ignore.

While Putin continues to deny the existence of these children and keep his romantic life under wraps, this report brings to the surface new questions about the lengths to which the Russian leader will go to maintain control—not just over his nation, but over his own public image.
