Beloved CBS Evening News Anchor Fired?

A longtime news anchor known for his work on CBS Saturday Morning and as a CBS News special correspondent, Jeff Glor, has been fired by Paramount Global.

Puck News was the first to report the news on X. According to the outlet, Glor, 49, was “among those being cut in latest round of Paramount job cuts, which target 2,000 positions overall.”

He is reportedly one of hundreds of employees who received news of the layoffs on Tuesday after the first round of job cuts were made in mid-August.

“Like the entire Media industry, we are working to accelerate streaming profitability while at the same time adjusting to the evolving landscape in our traditional businesses,” Paramount co-CEOs George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy and Brian Robbins wrote in a memo to employees early Tuesday, per The Hollywood Reporterand The Hill.

“In order to set Paramount up for continued success, we are taking these actions, and after today, 90 percent of these reductions will be complete.”

Paramount is the parent company of CBS.

According to THR, the layoffs come as Paramount hopes to save approximately $500 million in costs ahead of a merger with Skydance by laying off 15 percent of the company’s U.S.-based employees.

Glor joined CBS News as a correspondent in 2007 and was named anchor for CBS Evening News in 2017, before moving to Saturday Morning just two years later in 2019. He co-hosted the program with Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson. 

He also worked as a correspondent for 60 Minutes Sports and CBS This Morningand previously anchored The Early Show on weekday mornings in 2011.

A source told the New York Post that Glor’s “salary was ‘too high’ and that he largely kept to himself, opting not to play “office politics” or stick his neck out much since being moved to weekend duty.”

Additionally, sources told the Post that more layoffs could impact CBS News’ Washington. D.C. bureau after the 2024 presidential election.

In addition to Glor, Ben Tracy, Anna Werner and Roxana Saberi were also among veteran journalists cut in the latest round of company-wide layoffs, the Los Angeles Times reported.
