A JetBlue flight was forced to make an emergency landing Saturday, triggering moments of fear and anxiety among passengers onboard.

The flight, which had taken off from New York City’s JFK Airport and was bound for San Diego, was diverted to Salina, Kansas, around 6:30 p.m. after pilots received an alert about potential smoke in the cargo hold.

In a statement released on Sunday, JetBlue clarified that the emergency landing was prompted by what ultimately turned out to be a false alarm.

“JetBlue flight 1189 diverted to Salina, Kansas, when the pilots received an alert that there might be smoke in the cargo hold, descending safely and landing without incident,” a spokesperson said in an email. “Upon inspection, we determined the smoke indication presented to our pilots was a false indication.”

According to Flight Radar 24 data, reported on by KAKE, the aircraft rapidly descended from over 30,000 feet to land at Salina in less than ten minutes. This swift drop added to the urgency of the situation, escalating the tension among the roughly 130 passengers onboard.

Seth Odell, one of the passengers, described the moment when the pilot announced the alert over the intercom. “He said he saw an alert for smoke in the cargo bay,” Odell recalled, speaking to NBC News. “Some passengers reported hearing a loud bang too, and so we descended incredibly rapidly and landed at the extremely small airport in Salina.”

The gravity of the situation caused widespread panic among passengers. “So obviously everybody was starting to freak out,” Odell noted. “Some people were crying. It was a little bit intense for a few minutes.” Fortunately, he praised the crew for their efficiency and professionalism. “They did a great job getting everybody organized extremely quickly, and obviously, once we were on the ground, everyone was just elated.”

Upon landing, emergency services were on standby to assist, and Salina Fire Battalion Chief Derrick Herzog reported that there were no significant issues with the aircraft itself. He indicated that the problem might have been electrical, but further investigation would be needed to determine the exact cause.

While the emergency landing turned out to be a precautionary measure, the experience serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of air travel and the importance of safety protocols. Passengers were ultimately relieved that they landed safely, although the event left many shaken.

JetBlue’s quick response and the professionalism of the crew helped to ensure the safety and comfort of everyone onboard during a distressing situation. As travel continues to ramp up, stories like this highlight the need for preparedness and calm in the face of unexpected challenges in the skies.
