Donald Trump is significantly more likely to win the 2024 presidential election after an apparent attempt to assassinate him on Saturday left him injured, according to a leading bookmaker.
A gunman opened fire on a Trump rally near Butler, in Pennsylvania, on Saturday, killing one attendee and leaving two others seriously wounded, according to a Secret Service spokesperson.
Broadcast footage from the event showed Trump was struck on his right ear, leaving it bleeding, before he was surrounded by Secret Service agents and led from the stage after defiantly raising his hand in a clenched fist. The suspected attacker, who the FBI identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot and killed by return fire.
On Saturday, prior to the assassination attempt, Trump’s odds of winning the 2024 presidential election were 8/15 (65.2 percent) according to William Hill, a U.K. based betting company. However, after the shooting, this was slashed to a 4/11 (73.3 percent) chance of Trump achieving victory.
Reacting to the shooting on his Truth Social website, Trump offered his condolences to the family of the person killed, adding: “It is incredible that such an act can take place in our country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.
“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”
Biden condemned the attack in a post on X, formerly Twitter, writing: “I have been briefed on the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania.
“I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information.
“Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it.”
According to The Guardian, Crooks, who authorities are treating as the “subject involved” in the shooting, is a registered Republican voter in Pennsylvania, but in 2021 donated $15 to a left-leaning political action committee.
In the immediate aftermath of Saturday’s shooting Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO and X owner, endorsed Trump, later adding: “Last time America had a candidate this tough was Theodore Roosevelt.”
Speaking to the BBC, Greg Smith, a Trump supporter who was outside the rally, said he saw a man with a rifle crawling along a rooftop prior to the shooting and attempted to alert the authorities.
He said: “We noticed the guy bear-crawling up the roof of the building beside us, 50 feet away from us. He had a rifle; we could clearly see a rifle.
“We’re pointing at him, the police are down there running around on the ground, we’re like, ‘Hey man, there’s a guy on the roof with a rifle’… and the police did not know what was going on.”

You noticed the Republicans are the peaceful ones, there was no panic and stampede like it would have been if this was a Democratic rally. Democrats are pure evil and they have caused all this. Biden changes of winning have gone from barely to zero! This nation needs healing from all the evil the Democrats have caused. The shooter was a registered Republican on record. This horrible action attempt on Trump had nothing to do with Democrats in anyway.
Neither party has any grounds for finger pointing at the other.
Political bad mouthing a party after a serious and tragic event like on Saturday evening when the shooter and an innocent bystanders died with others critically injured, is uncalled for from any one. It’s exactly that which shows how ugly and despicable politics in America has become.
What it means for a person to act decently as an “American” appreciating democracy’s ideas individuals’ rights, has been lost on those who resort to hate based behavior and speech.
The “ugly American” term in the world gets traction from stories about tragic events like mass shootings like this and the to often baseless negative rhetoric generated.
Sadly, poor judgement in making condemning remarks I read and hear comes from the right Republican conservative side of politics. This venomous toxicity is unwarranted after any assault and/or disliked election result. That Americans are better than the ugly stories reported in media may not apply if what gets reported is true fact.
Basement boy with so many other democrats have said he will be gone before this election. Biden stated President Trump has a bulls eye on him. So please tell me at anytime has any republican publicly advocated for Biden death? No not one time. Just weeks ago A democrat congressman put forth a bill to take President Trump security services away. Media and Hollywood has made death threats at him. Yet we’re has it been written you heard of a republican saying these things about basement boy? I seen no chaos at the deadly rally. I seen no riots destroying communities. I seen no death threats towards democrats. Seen only certain media outlets expressing gratefulness President Trump was ok. I seen none on the republican supporters attacking and harming anyone else. It took three hours for basement boy to even talk about it and he would not even say assassination attempt. As for the democrat party and there jesters of concern I don’t buy it for a minute after what they have done over the last nine years. I do want to thank basement boy for keeping one promise. To unite the country and its citizens. Only not the way he intended. I am furious but unlike democrats I don’t retaliate like they do. I am a law obeying citizen and believe in a justice system that is not two tiered. Remember you all came up with “NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW”. Time to own those words. To say republicans are violent just proved who the violence comes from. Your hatred has just vilified President Trump and give him the 2024 election.
So blame President Trump and his supporters for this now. Media is also part of problem and wonder why people like CNN is in the toilet. Stop lying and tell truth. God is protecting the one man who is protecting us. Many angels watching over him. Who says to put bullseye on another person let alone call for their assassination? People need held accountable for what they say. Threatening one’s life has always been a crime yet for nine years no one has been held accountable on the left. I would vote for President Trump no matter what and many of my democrat friends will now also after this. They are just as appalled as I am.
