NASA’s Psyche spacecraft has set out on a historic mission to investigate the metallic asteroid 16 Psyche, one of the Solar System’s most mysterious objects. The spacecraft is traveling 3.5 billion kilometers over the course of six years to reach its objective, an asteroid situated halfway between Mars and Jupiter’s orbits, after leaving Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Based on telescopic observations, researchers speculate that this metal world may consist of roughly 60% iron and nickel. Driven by a Falcon Heavy rocket, the Psyche spacecraft launched at 10:19:43 local time on a course that would bring it near to 16 Psyche in August 2029. With an estimated $1.2 billion in funding, this mission is anticipated to be completed in November 2031.
The Search for Unprecedented Findings:
Because 16 Psyche is unique among the millions of asteroids in the Solar System, scientists are keen to investigate it. Measuring about 280 kilometers (175 miles) at its widest point, Psyche is the largest of just nine asteroids with properties identical to our own. There are two main hypotheses about where 16 Psyche came from. It is hypothesized to be the exposed core of a celestial body, similar to Earth’s molten metallic center, with its outer layers having been removed by impacts by early Solar System asteroids. According to the alternative view, Psyche originated from the first components in the Solar System and is an unmelted primordial body.
Possible Fossil Magnetic Relic:
Scientists anticipate that Psyche will display a “fossil” magnetic field, which would preserve traces of its molten and convecting past, if it is, in fact, the leftover core of a failed planet.
