Yoda, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois and part of the BORTAC K9 squad with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, achieved a dramatic conclusion to the intensive 14-day manhunt for fugitive prisoner Danelo Cavalcante in South Coventry Township, Chester County.

Yoda was crucial in bringing the search to a conclusion, officials stated in a press conference after Cavalcante was apprehended. Yoda bit Cavalcante to no end as tactical teams closed in on the convicted murderer, and Cavalcante was quickly apprehended.

Massive teamwork was required in the hunt for Cavalcante, who had escaped from Chester County Prison on August 31. Together with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, border patrol agents from Buffalo, Detroit, El Paso, Texas, and Blaine, Washington joined the manhunt, with Pennsylvania State Police leading the charge.

The manhunt covered a number of areas in the rural county, from South Coventry Township in the north to the southern area close to Longwood Gardens. In addition to being wanted for murder in his home country of Brazil, Cavalcante was convicted of life in prison without the possibility of parole for the violent 2021 death of Deborah Brandao, his ex-girlfriend, in the Phoenixville region. Brandao had been fatally stabbed 38 times by Cavalcante in front of her two small children.

Officials published a video of Cavalcante’s audacious prison escape, which involved scaling a wall and dodging barbed wire barricades.

Even though the hunt was complicated by a heatwave that affected the Philadelphia area, law enforcement’s perseverance, together with the use of thermal imaging-equipped planes and the commitment of K-9 units like Yoda, finally resulted in Cavalcante’s capture. Wearing an Eagles hoodie at the time, the escaped felon was apprehended again without any problems.

According to state police, Cavalcante was taken to the state barracks in Avondale by SWAT truck upon his recapture and required emergency medical assistance.

This high-stakes manhunt’s successful conclusion highlights the crucial role committed law enforcement officers and their K-9 partners play in maintaining public safety and apprehending fugitives.
