After losing her position as prime minister of Finland earlier this year, former premier Sanna Marin has declared her retirement from politics. During her time, Marin was one of Europe’s youngest presidents, making waves as she led a five-party, left-wing coalition. Her management of the COVID-19 pandemic and the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine made her stand out.
Change to a New Position:
“Time to move on,” Sanna Marin said on announcing her decision to step down from politics. She also expressed her enthusiasm to take on a new role that she feels will benefit all of Finland. Her decision was prompted by her party’s recent election results, in which it placed third with 19.9% of the vote. The Social Democratic Party (SDP).
At the Tony Blair Institute, a Position:
Marin disclosed that she has agreed to work for the charity Tony Blair Institute for Global Change in London. Using her background as prime minister, she will act as a “strategic counselor” in this capacity, offering guidance on a range of policy matters, including as gender equality, technology, good governance, and the environment.
Contemplating Her Departure:
Marin vowed to serve Finnish voters well—possibly even better—in her new role during a press conference announcing her departure. Her career has undergone a dramatic change with her move from domestic politics to foreign policy advice.
Marin’s Divisive Status:
Throughout her term in office, Sanna Marin’s personal life made news on a regular basis, causing controversy. Videos of her drinking alcohol, going out to clubs, and partying surfaced, drawing criticism and attention from all around the world. Some people felt that these activities were incompatible with her position as prime minister.
Following the disclosure of the contentious partying tapes and the failure of her re-election campaign, Marin revealed in May that she was divorcing her spouse of 19 years. She expressed her appreciation for their 19-year journey together as a family and their time spent together.
