The community of Sayreville, New Jersey, has been rocked by the arrest of a 28-year-old Virginia man in connection with the murder of Councilwoman Eunice Dwumfour.

Rashid Ali Bynum was apprehended by state and federal authorities outside a residence in Chesapeake City, Virginia, on Tuesday morning. He now faces charges of first-degree murder and gun offenses, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone.

Councilwoman Dwumfour, a 30-year-old Republican, was tragically gunned down outside her Sayreville home in February. The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. while her 12-year-old daughter was inside their residence.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a man dressed in black fleeing the scene, prompting an intensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the murder.

Months of silence from investigators followed, leaving the community in the dark about the progress of the case and the potential motive behind Dwumfour’s killing. However, during the recent press conference, Prosecutor Ciccone shed light on the developments that led to Bynum’s arrest.

Authorities linked Bynum to the murder scene through his cellphone and a white Hyundai Elantra, both of which were found near the crime scene. Witness descriptions and surveillance footage also pointed to Bynum as the suspect.

Further evidence indicated that Bynum and Dwumfour had a prior acquaintance, as Bynum’s name was listed as a contact in the councilwoman’s phone, alongside the acronym “FCF,” representing the “Fire Congress Fellowship” associated with a church Dwumfour had been affiliated with.

Investigators discovered that Bynum had conducted internet searches about Dwumfour’s church, the town she lived in, and compatible magazines for a specific handgun. In addition, a handgun was found at Bynum’s address in Smithfield, Virginia, where he had returned after the alleged shooting.

The motive behind the murder remains undisclosed, and Prosecutor Ciccone did not provide any insight during the press conference.

Dwumfour’s family, present at the conference, expressed their confusion about why anyone would want to harm the beloved councilwoman, who was not only a public servant but also a pastor deeply committed to her religious beliefs.

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin expressed his condolences to Dwumfour’s family and commended the tireless efforts of law enforcement in bringing the case to this point. The extensive investigation spared no effort, ensuring that no stone was left unturned.

While the arrest of Rashid Ali Bynum offers a glimmer of hope for justice, it cannot undo the pain and loss experienced by the community and Dwumfour’s loved ones.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the community remains united in their grief, seeking solace and answers in the wake of this tragic event.
