Lucy Letby became emotional in court as the jury were shown images of her bedroom and personal effects.
A nurse accused of murdering seven infants rubbed tears from her eyes as a jury were shown pictures of her bedroom. At Manchester Crown Court yesterday (Monday), Letby, 33, appeared to weep as the images were shown depicting a disheveled room and sleeping area.
Among objects on display were a pink suitcase and two handbags, in which investigators found handwritten notes, the court heard. The notes were said to contain declarations of love for a doctor, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, with scrawlings next to his name reading “I love you” and “my best friend”, the Sun reports.
Pictures above the metal framed bed and on the white walls of the room carried upbeat slogans “Shine Like A Diamond” and “Leave Sparkles Wherever You Go”.
Between June 2015 and June 2016 Letby is accused of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill 10 more. It’s claimed the neonatal nurse repeatedly targeted some of the newborns, including one infant she is alleged to have killed after failing three times previously. Letby denies all 22 charges.
The court heard a 2016 diary seized from the home contained notes from Letby for some of the children she is alleged to have attacked. On some dates, words were written such as “twin” and “twin resus”.
A Post-it note, which had previously been shown in court, included the words: “I am evil I did this.”
The note added: “I don’t deserve to live. I killed them on purpose because I’m not good enough to care for them. I am a horrible person”.
It was said in court previously Letby was a “constant malevolent presence” while working on the neonatal ward at the Countess of Chester Hospital.
A “significant rise” in the number of infant deaths at the hospital led to consultants growing suspicious of the nurse. For legal reasons the surviving and deceased children cannot be identified or the parents and witnesses connected to the babies.
