In the years leading up to and following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s fairytale wedding, comparisons have been drawn between the inspiring humanitarian work and advocacy for critical global issues carried out by the Duchess and Princess Diana. Although the two women never got to meet, the Duchess of Sussex has often honored her late mother-in-law in subtle ways. Whether it’s wearing significant pieces of Princess Diana’s jewelry at major events or Meghan Markle’s sweet tribute in her children’s book, The Bench, fans have often spotted these special details.
However, according to royal author Tom Bower, the first meeting between Meghan and Princess Diana’s family reportedly left Prince Harry “disappointed” and sparked “unease”…
In his controversial new book, Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War Between the Windsors, Tom claimed that whilst the Duke of Sussex “assumed” the Spencers would immediately spot a “similarity” between his late mother and his then-fiancée, this sadly wasn’t the case. As reported by OK! (opens in new tab), in his book the author alleged that Prince Harry “had introduced Meghan to Diana’s two sisters, Jane and Sarah, and her best friend Julia Samuel”.
“Harry assumed that Diana’s family and friends would see a similarity between Diana and his fiancée,” Tom continued, before suggesting that the highly-anticipated meeting sadly left the Duke “disappointed”.
“Both, he said, shared the same problems. He was disappointed. No one agreed that his vulnerable mother had anything in common with his girlfriend,” the author wrote.
However, this supposed lack of agreement between them and Prince Harry over just how similar Princess Diana and Meghan were apparently wasn’t the only issue the Spencers and Julia had with the royals’ relationship. The author also claimed that if anything the second problem was “more discomforting” as they reportedly didn’t believe even then that the Duchess of Sussex would “fit in” with her husband-to-be’s paternal family.
“More discomforting for him, they thought Meghan would not fit in with the Royal Family,” he alleged, before later suggesting that they weren’t alone in this.
Tom claimed, “Their unease was voiced by Charles Spencer, Diana’s brother. Spencer cautioned his nephew to reconsider his haste towards marriage. His advice provoked a bitter reaction.”
Despite this reported interaction between Prince Harry and his uncle, he and Meghan went on to marry in a stunning ceremony at St George’s Chapel near Windsor Castle in 2018. Just two years later, however, Prince Harry and Meghan “stepped back” as senior working royals and have gone on to settle in their Santa Barbara mansion. Here they have found the freedom to work on multiple exciting ventures, from Meghan Markle’s podcast to Prince Harry’s memoir.
Whilst last year Prince Harry and his Spencer aunts and uncle came together for the unveiling of a Princess Diana statue at Kensington Palace on what would’ve been her 60th birthday as they honored her memory and showcased their own enduring bond.
