Daisy Valenzuela, Brenda Silva Cervantes and Juan Valenzuela (victims)

A seemingly ordinary morning inside a Kansas family home ended in tragedy when a 21-year-old man allegedly shot and killed his parents and sister, leaving his younger brother scrambling to escape with a 2-year-old girl who had been inside during the violence.

Newly released court documents paint a chilling picture of the September 26 shooting in Wichita, revealing that the suspect, Juan D. Valenzuela-Silva, had been speaking calmly with his mother just moments before gunfire erupted.

The victims were identified as his father, Juan Arnulfo Valenzuela-Ayala, 49, his mother, Brenda Silva-Cervantes, 40, and his sister, Daisy Aracely Valenzuela, 25, who was the mother of the young girl who survived.

According to an arrest affidavit, the morning appeared uneventful when the suspect’s brother’s girlfriend arrived at the family’s home on East Blake Street. She encountered Brenda in the kitchen, where the mother was asking her son to help with some paperwork. The witness told investigators there was no arguing or obvious tension between them.

Afterward, she noticed Valenzuela-Silva sitting alone on the living room couch before heading upstairs to spend time with his brother.

What happened next would leave three members of the family dead.

The woman told detectives she heard a noise resembling a gun being loaded, followed by several popping sounds. A woman’s scream broke through the commotion, followed by more popping noises and the cries of Daisy’s 2-year-old daughter.

At first, the witness wasn’t certain she was hearing actual gunfire because she knew there were imitation firearms inside the home. But the situation became terrifyingly clear when the suspect’s brother stepped into the hallway.

According to investigators, the brother encountered Valenzuela-Silva coming upstairs carrying what appeared to be an AR-15-style rifle. The suspect reportedly told him, “I have to get out of here,” before briefly entering his bedroom.

When the brother went downstairs, he discovered his father and sister lying on the floor. He immediately grabbed his young niece and escaped the house with his girlfriend.

The desperate effort to get the child to safety came as authorities received an emergency call from the residence shortly before 11:30 a.m.

Wichita police arrived to find Juan Valenzuela-Ayala and Daisy in the living room, while Brenda was discovered in a bedroom. All three were pronounced dead at the scene.

The toddler and two 17-year-olds who were also inside the residence survived without physical injuries.

As investigators began piecing together the family’s final moments together, they uncovered allegations suggesting tensions had been building long before the shooting.

Daisy’s partner told detectives that Valenzuela-Silva had sometimes behaved suspiciously toward relatives and had become convinced his father was speaking negatively about him.

In one particularly troubling incident about five months earlier, the suspect allegedly pulled out a kitchen knife because he believed his father intended to kill him. The confrontation ended without anyone being hurt, according to the affidavit.

Whether those reported suspicions contributed to the September shooting remains unclear, and authorities have not announced a definitive motive.

Investigators also searched the suspect’s bedroom, where they recovered a rifle, a handgun and numerous imitation firearms. Police said the rifle had been purchased by Valenzuela-Silva in 2024.

After the shooting, authorities launched a search for the suspect, who had reportedly driven away from the home in an Infiniti SUV. He was located in Butler County and arrested without incident later that day.

Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett subsequently charged Valenzuela-Silva with capital murder and aggravated endangering a child. He is being held on a bond of approximately $100 million, with another court hearing scheduled for October 27.

While the criminal case moves forward, surviving relatives are struggling with the loss of three loved ones whose lives extended far beyond the circumstances of their deaths.

Brenda was remembered in an online obituary for her kindness, resilience and devotion to family. Her husband, Juan, was described as a hardworking man who enjoyed fishing, fixing things and caring for his cherished pickup truck, affectionately nicknamed “Fire Truck.”

Daisy, meanwhile, was remembered as a loving young mother with a vibrant personality and a passion for makeup and hairstyling. Her family recalled her special talent for making others feel accepted and understood.

Relatives have established an online fundraiser to help cover funeral expenses, travel and other costs as they work to honor all three victims.

The allegations have left a devastating question hanging over the case: What could have driven a young man to allegedly turn against three members of his own family during what witnesses described as an otherwise normal morning?

For now, investigators have offered no definitive answer.
