Federal agents raided the Washington, D.C.-area home of Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar early Monday morning, October 12, as part of a criminal investigation involving one of President Donald Trump’s most outspoken political opponents.

Agents with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) executed a search warrant at the Minnesota congresswoman’s residence before dawn, according to Fox News Digital. The operation was also confirmed by the Justice Department and independently reported by The Associated Press.

Federal authorities are reportedly investigating possible fraud involving immigration documents completed by Omar’s late father when their family came to the United States from Somalia during her childhood.

The Justice Department confirmed that agents carried out a search authorized by a federal judge but declined to provide specifics about the investigation or what investigators were seeking.

The search marks a significant development in a controversy that has followed Omar for years and comes amid her increasingly bitter political feud with Trump.

In September, White House border czar Tom Homan publicly acknowledged an ongoing criminal investigation involving the congresswoman. However, he declined to say whether investigators had uncovered evidence of immigration or naturalization fraud.

At the time, Omar told Fox News that federal authorities had not contacted her about the investigation. She has repeatedly rejected allegations of immigration and marriage fraud, previously describing them as politically motivated and false.

Omar, 44, was born in Somalia and came to the United States as a refugee. She became an American citizen in 2000 and made history in 2018 when she was elected to Congress, becoming one of the first Muslim women to serve in the House of Representatives.

She represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, which includes Minneapolis, and is a prominent member of the progressive group of lawmakers known as “The Squad.”

Her relationship with Trump has been hostile for years, with the president repeatedly targeting her immigration background, political positions and criticism of his administration.

In a January Truth Social post, Trump called Omar a “scammer” and suggested that she and others associated with Somalia belonged in jail or should be sent back to the country.

The latest federal action is particularly sensitive because it involves an elected member of Congress who has frequently accused the Trump administration of using immigration enforcement to intimidate political opponents.

In August, Omar demanded answers from Homeland Security Investigations after an undercover agent was reportedly stationed outside one of her town hall meetings in Minnesota. She questioned the agency’s activities and raised concerns about potential political intimidation.

However, federal officials have not publicly established any connection between that incident and Monday’s search.

The investigation also raises important legal questions. Although Omar has been a naturalized U.S. citizen for more than 25 years, naturalization fraud allegations can carry serious consequences if supported by sufficient evidence. Any attempt to revoke citizenship would require separate legal proceedings, and the government would face a substantial burden of proof.

A court-authorized search warrant does not establish that a crime occurred, and there has been no public announcement of criminal charges against Omar in connection with Monday’s operation.

As of Monday morning, Omar’s office had not publicly responded to the search, and federal officials had not disclosed whether agents seized documents or electronic devices.

The Justice Department has also not announced any arrests.

For now, the raid represents a dramatic escalation in federal scrutiny of a sitting congresswoman who has spent years clashing with the president. Whether the investigation ultimately results in charges remains unclear.
