Melania Trump Makes Surprise CNN Move After Trump’s White House Ban

First Lady Melania Trump is taking a different approach to CNN just days after President Donald Trump barred the network from the White House.

Melania Trump’s office approved CNN senior White House reporter Betsy Klein to cover the first lady’s “Fostering the Future Together” event in New York on Tuesday, according to CNN and a confirmation from the first lady’s office reported by The Independent.

The decision is notable because Klein was among the journalists directly affected by Trump’s new restrictions.

Klein said Saturday that her White House press credential had been deactivated when she attempted to enter the complex. CNN, MS NOW and Politico reporters were all denied entry after Trump announced that the three organizations would no longer be allowed on White House grounds.

There is no indication that Melania has publicly criticized her husband’s decision. But her office’s decision means CNN will still have direct access to at least one major administration-related event this week even as the network remains locked out of the White House.

The dispute began Friday when Trump announced that CNN, MS NOW and Politico would be barred, accusing the organizations of publishing what he described as “fake news” and false reporting.

The White House defended the decision Monday, arguing in an official statement that access to the presidential complex is a “privilege” rather than an automatic right granted to every news organization. The administration maintained that the outlets remain free to publish their reporting despite losing White House access.

CNN, MS NOW and Politico strongly disagree.

The three organizations filed a federal lawsuit Monday arguing that the administration retaliated against them because of their coverage and violated both their First Amendment press rights and Fifth Amendment due-process protections.

The lawsuit seeks to have the journalists’ access restored. A hearing on the outlets’ request for a temporary restraining order is expected Wednesday before U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly. Kelly, who was appointed to the federal bench by Trump, previously handled CNN correspondent Jim Acosta’s 2018 press-pass dispute with the first Trump administration.

The media fight has also disrupted the traditional White House television pool.

CNN had been scheduled for pool duties, but after the network was excluded, ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox News joined CNN in suspending presidential TV pool coverage under the current restrictions. The pool system allows one television crew to cover events in locations where it would be impractical for every network to have its own camera team.

That makes Melania’s decision to credential Klein even more unusual.

The first lady is in New York for a busy series of events surrounding the United Nations General Assembly.

Her Tuesday event will focus on “Fostering the Future Together,” the international coalition she launched during the 2025 UN General Assembly to expand educational technology while promoting protections for children online.

The initiative has grown substantially since then. The White House says representatives from 45 nations attended its inaugural summit in Washington in March, along with technology companies including Microsoft, Google, Meta, Adobe, OpenAI and others.

Melania is expected to meet with representatives and first spouses from dozens of countries during this week’s gathering.

On Wednesday, she is also scheduled to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange as part of a week of high-profile appearances. Reports say she will help launch IMPERIA, an invitation-only network aimed at connecting female CEOs and other senior executives.

Melania was not the only senior administration figure interacting with journalists from organizations affected by the president’s ban.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio attended a State Department media reception Sunday night at Manhattan’s Kimberly Hotel, where reporters from CNN, Politico and MS NOW were among the guests. Politico reported that Rubio delivered informal remarks and mingled with journalists alongside other administration officials.

The distinction is important: Trump’s order concerns access to the White House grounds and White House press operations. It does not amount to a government-wide prohibition on administration officials speaking with the three organizations.

Still, Melania’s decision creates an unusual contrast.

Within days of Klein losing her White House credential, the same CNN reporter received approval from the first lady’s office to cover one of Melania Trump’s highest-profile events of the week.

Whether that difference signals anything broader about how the first lady intends to deal with the press remains unclear.

For now, what is established is considerably more specific: CNN remains barred from the White House, the network is fighting that restriction in federal court, and Melania Trump’s office has nevertheless decided to let one of its reporters through the door at her own event.
