Trump Says He ‘Barely’ Talks to His Children

President Donald Trump is raising eyebrows after making a surprisingly candid admission about his relationship with his children — claiming he barely talks to them about much of anything beyond telling them he loves them.

The 80-year-old president made the remark during an interview with Punchbowl News reporter Jake Sherman on Fly Out Day, where the conversation turned to the Trump family’s lucrative cryptocurrency ventures and Democratic efforts to impose restrictions on presidential financial interests.

Sherman noted that some Democratic lawmakers have pushed to limit the Trump family’s ability to conduct crypto business while Trump occupies the White House.

Trump defended his involvement in the industry, arguing that cryptocurrency is strategically important for the United States.

“I do it, very simply, because we can’t let China have it or Japan have it,” Trump said. “Other countries really want it, and we dominate in it. So, to me, it’s very important.”

Trump then complained that lawmakers wanted legislation that would treat him differently from other Americans.

Asked whether he opposed placing his financial interests into a blind trust, Trump insisted he would have no problem doing so.

“I don’t run my stuff anyway,” he said. “I let my kids run it, and I never talk to them about things.”

Trump went even further.

“They’re not involved in government. I don’t talk to them about government. I don’t talk to them about much, other than to say, ‘I love you, kids.'”

The comments immediately drew skepticism from Trump critics, particularly because the president’s family remains deeply connected to businesses that have benefited from his political brand.

One social media critic mocked Trump’s claim, writing, “Yeah right… The guy couldn’t be bothered to go to his own kid’s wedding. He doesn’t do love. He never has.”

Trump’s relationship with his children has already faced renewed scrutiny this year.

In May, the president skipped the Bahamas wedding of his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr.

Trump had previously said Don Jr. wanted him there, but suggested world events made the timing difficult.

“(Don Jr.) would like me to go, but it’s going to be just a small, little private affair. I’m gonna try and make it,” Trump said at the time.

“I said, ‘You know this is not good timing for me. I have a thing called Iran and other things,'” he continued.

Trump then complained that the media would attack him regardless of what he decided.

“That’s one I can’t win on. If I do attend, I get killed. If I don’t attend, I get killed — by the fake news, of course.”

Trump added that Don Jr. was marrying “a person I’ve known for a long time” and said he hoped the couple would have “a great marriage.”

But Trump’s absence became even more conspicuous after he later attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals in New York City, where the hometown Knicks lost with the president in attendance.

That only added fuel to criticism over Trump’s new claim that his conversations with his children apparently don’t extend much further than saying he loves them.

“Does Barron look like he’s ever heard his dad tell him he loves him?” one critic asked online.

Another joked, “‘I love you, kids.’ … Even Melania’s son.”

The jab referenced another awkward Trump moment earlier this year involving his youngest son, Barron.

During a White House Mother’s Day event, Trump praised First Lady Melania Trump as an “incredible mom” before describing their 20-year-old son as her “little boy who’s quite tall.”

“He’s a little boy to us, but he’s quite tall,” Trump said. “And he’s great. She takes great care of him.”

The unusual wording immediately lit up social media, where critics joked that Trump appeared to momentarily forget Barron was also his own son.

“He seems to keep forgetting that Melania’s son is his son,” one person blasted.

Another joked, “Hallmark really missed out not hiring this wordsmith to write all their Mother’s Day cards.”

Trump has five children from three marriages.

Don Jr., Eric and Ivanka Trump are his children with his late first wife, Ivana Trump. Tiffany Trump is his daughter with second wife Marla Maples, while Barron is his only child with Melania.

But Trump’s insistence that he doesn’t discuss much with his children is attracting particular scrutiny because several of them remain closely tied to businesses connected to the Trump name.

Trump co-founded crypto company World Liberty Financial alongside members of his family, including sons Don Jr. and Eric, with Barron also connected to the venture.

Trump has reportedly made hundreds of millions of dollars through World Liberty Financial, fueling ongoing questions from Democrats and ethics watchdogs over the line between the president’s public office and his family’s private business empire.

For Trump, the message is simple: his kids handle the business, he handles the presidency, and the two worlds supposedly don’t mix.

His critics aren’t buying it.
