Ohio Democrat Marcy Kaptur Hospitalized After Shocking Hit-and-Run Crash on Way to Church

Veteran Ohio Rep. Marcy Kaptur was rushed to the hospital Sunday after a frightening hit-and-run crash while she was traveling to church, according to her office.

Kaptur, 80, was riding as a passenger when another vehicle slammed into the car and fled the scene, sparking an ongoing police investigation.

Officers responded to the crash in Toledo at approximately 10:48 a.m. Kaptur and another person were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

“She is active, alert, and being treated for non-life-threatening injuries,” her office said in a statement, offering reassurance as news of the crash quickly spread through Washington and her home state.

Authorities have not released details about the suspected driver, and the investigation remains active.

The incident comes at a critical moment for Kaptur, a respected Democratic lawmaker who is currently the fourth-longest-serving member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Despite her decades of experience and deep roots in northwest Ohio, Kaptur is once again facing a difficult reelection battle in one of the country’s most closely watched congressional races.

She is scheduled to face Trump-endorsed Republican Derek Merrin, who came within less than 1 percentage point of defeating her in 2024. Political observers expect another fierce and expensive contest as Republicans attempt to expand their power in the House.

News of Kaptur’s hospitalization prompted messages of support from both sides of the political aisle.

“My thoughts are with @RepMarcyKaptur after hearing the news of this morning’s car crash in Toledo,” Republican Ohio Rep. Dave Taylor wrote on X. “Charity and I are wishing her a speedy recovery.”

Kaptur’s office has not announced when she may be released from the hospital or return to her official duties.
