Dave Matthews turned a concert into a political flashpoint when he stopped the music and delivered a fiery onstage rebuke of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

The Dave Matthews Band frontman paused a recent show to speak out against ICE following the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Houston father and grandfather who Matthews said was killed by agents in a disturbing incident that has sparked outrage among immigration advocates.

“I don’t know why we let people make excuses for why we should kill each other,” Matthews told the crowd, growing emotional as he reflected on violence, fear and the way political rhetoric can shape how people treat one another.

“There’s always reasons that we should kill each other,” he continued. “They tell our children and use their words when they grow up. I wonder what’s wrong with us. I don’t know why we lost our way. Maybe we’ve always been like this, we just got better at making things that can kill each other.”

Matthews then turned his attention directly to ICE and the death of Salgado Araujo, whose name he said he had written down so he would not forget it.

“I wanted to say his name,” Matthews said. “This father and grandfather who was murdered by ICE in Houston, Texas. And then they say he’s not even the guy — he’s not even the guy they were looking for. Well, then don’t pull the trigger, you a–holes.”

The blunt remark drew attention online after clips of the concert began circulating, with supporters praising Matthews for using his platform and critics accusing him of turning a music event into a political rally.

Federal officials have described the Houston shooting very differently. According to reports, ICE agents claimed Salgado Araujo, who was in the country illegally, allegedly “weaponized his vehicle” and tried to run over an officer, prompting an agent to fire in self-defense.

Matthews, however, made clear he was not satisfied with that explanation.

“I’m sorry if that language offends his family or his friends or his community, but it’s just making me mad,” he said. “I want to send this to the memory of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was killed a few days ago in Houston by ICE.”

The singer then broadened his criticism, railing against what he described as aggressive immigration enforcement tactics under President Donald Trump’s administration.

“I don’t want my taxes to pay for ICE, to masked thugs to roam our streets and terrorize our communities and rip families apart,” Matthews said.

He argued that the country should be focused on helping vulnerable people rather than using fear and force against them.

“We should be taking care of each other,” Matthews said. “We should be housing the homeless. We shouldn’t be throwing people to the ground.”

Matthews has long been outspoken about political and social issues, but his latest remarks struck a particularly raw nerve at a time when immigration enforcement remains one of the most divisive issues in the country.

For many fans, the moment was a powerful reminder of the singer’s willingness to speak his mind, even in the middle of a concert. For others, it was another sign of how deeply politics has seeped into nearly every corner of American life — including a night out for live music.

  1. Good for him. ICE is a disgrace and danger to America. I bet that ICE would be pissed off if someone did that to there family.
