White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt set off a wave of speculation this week after making a startling comment that many took as a sign of trouble inside Donald Trump’s orbit.

During an exchange with reporters on Wednesday, April 22, Leavitt appeared to distance herself from the president when she was asked why Trump had not done more to sway voters in Virginia ahead of a redistricting measure that could ultimately hand Democrats more seats. The measure was approved earlier this week, and Leavitt’s response instantly turned heads.

“That’s a question that’s political by nature,” she said. “As you know, I’m not part of the president’s political team anymore. I do sit here at the White House as a government employee.”

The wording caught many off guard. Even so, she still tried to shield the president from criticism, insisting he has “a lot on his plate” and pointing to his packed schedule. She noted that Trump had hosted a telephone call the night before the election and said he had already made his views on the results clear.

But online, people were far more focused on her curious wording than on her defense.

Once the clip began circulating on social media, speculation exploded. Some users openly wondered whether Leavitt had been demoted, pushed aside, or was quietly preparing for an exit. Others mocked the phrasing, with one TikTok user joking that she said “as you all know” even though it was seemingly the first time anyone had heard such a thing. Despite the swirling rumors, Politico Playbook has reported that Leavitt is expected to return to her post after maternity leave.
