Pete Hegseth Snaps at Reporter Over Iran Questions During Heated Briefing

Things got tense fast at the Pentagon.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth clashed with a reporter during a fiery press conference after being pressed to explain what critics say is the Trump administration’s shifting message on Iran.

The briefing came just after a fragile two-week ceasefire was announced between the U.S., Iran, and Israel—temporarily pausing a conflict that had been escalating rapidly. Standing at the podium, Hegseth framed the moment as a major win.

He declared the U.S. had secured an “epic victory” and claimed all strategic objectives had been met. He also suggested the outcome could have been far more destructive.

“If Iran refused our terms, the next targets would have been their power plants, bridges, and energy infrastructure,” he said, adding that President Trump had the power to devastate Iran’s economy—but chose not to.

But the tone shifted when a reporter pushed back.

ABC’s Luis Martinez questioned how Hegseth’s recent comments about showing “mercy” lined up with his earlier remarks suggesting there would be “no quarter” for Iranian forces—a phrase widely seen as extreme and controversial.

That’s when things boiled over.

Hegseth fired back, accusing the reporter of being “typical ABC” and suggesting he wasn’t listening.

“I try to be nice up here,” he snapped, before doubling down on the administration’s position. He argued that Trump used strength to bring Iran to the negotiating table, calling him a “president of peace” who chose diplomacy over destruction.

Hegseth also rejected any suggestion that his rhetoric put U.S. troops at risk.

Still, the conflict has already taken a toll. At least 13 American service members have died, and two others were rescued from inside Iran after their fighter jet was shot down—an incident that reportedly sparked a high-stakes recovery mission.

The heated exchange wasn’t the only moment of tension.

Earlier in the briefing, Hegseth lashed out at another reporter who shouted a question about ongoing missile activity in the region.

“Why are you so rude?” he shot back. “Just wait. So nasty.”

The confrontations are part of a growing pattern. Hegseth has repeatedly taken aim at the media in recent weeks, accusing outlets of bias and even limiting access to certain journalists during briefings.

At a recent cabinet meeting, he also praised President Trump while blasting what he called the “hate-Trump media,” further fueling criticism about the administration’s handling of press relations.
