Melania Trump is once again catching heat online — this time over a White House Easter tradition that quickly turned into fresh fodder for her critics.

During the annual White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday, April 6, the first lady sat down to read The Runaway Bunny to a group of children gathered for the festivities on the South Lawn. What should have been a lighthearted family moment instead sparked a flood of mocking commentary on social media, with some viewers seizing on Melania’s delivery and heavily criticizing her accent.

The event, a long-running White House tradition, featured the usual mix of games, activities and entertainment for families. But online, attention shifted fast once video clips of Melania reading began making the rounds. Detractors piled on almost immediately, with some claiming she appeared to struggle through the book and others posting cruel remarks about whether the children could even understand her.

One critic sneered, “I’m surprised she can read her own name,” while another sarcastically asked whether there was “a translator” on hand. Others were even harsher, with one calling her “a complete idiot” and another mocking the way she pronounced certain words.

For many of Trump’s critics, the moment fed into a broader frustration with the carefully polished image that often surrounds the former model and first lady. And the ridicule only intensified after Donald Trump decided to heap praise on his wife in front of the crowd.

At one point during the event, the president launched into a glowing introduction, calling Melania a “movie star” and marveling over the attention surrounding her documentary, MELANIA, which premiered in January.

“Our great first lady,” Trump said. “What do you think of our first lady? She’s a movie star.”

That comment quickly set off another round of backlash online. Critics mocked the over-the-top praise, especially given the poor reception Melania’s documentary reportedly received. Social media users slammed Trump for exaggerating yet again, with one person writing that the film “tanked” and another accusing him of doing what he “always does” — inflating reality to flatter his inner circle.

The backlash comes as Melania continues to struggle with public perception. According to a December 2025 YouGov poll, just 36 percent of Americans viewed her favorably, while 43 percent held an unfavorable opinion. Another 18 percent said they felt neutral. Even compared to earlier years, those numbers reinforce a long-running pattern: Melania remains one of the least popular first ladies in modern political memory.

Back in 2021, her approval hovered around 42 percent, already placing her near the bottom. But the newer numbers suggest the image problems have only gotten worse.

To her supporters, the attacks are unfair and deeply personal. To her critics, the Easter reading fiasco was just another awkward public moment from a first lady they see as distant, overrated and propped up by Trump’s nonstop hype machine.

Either way, what was supposed to be a wholesome White House photo op ended up becoming another bruising public relations mess — and another reminder that in Trump-world, even story time can spiral into political spectacle.
