A routine drive turned into a nightmare in central Florida after a devastating crash left a truck driver dead in one of the most shocking scenes first responders say they’ve encountered.

Authorities say 44-year-old Gabriel Lorenzo Beauford was killed Wednesday morning, April 1, after his vehicle slammed into a semi-truck hauling massive logs along US 98 North.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the collision happened around 10:50 a.m. near State Road 471 in Lakeland — and what happened next was nothing short of catastrophic.

Investigators say Beauford was traveling southbound behind a Volvo semi carrying timber when the truck ahead began slowing down to make a left turn. For reasons still under investigation, Beauford appears not to have realized the semi was braking.

In a split second, his truck plowed into the rear of the timber-hauling vehicle — directly into the protruding logs.

The impact turned deadly instantly.

Officials revealed that large pieces of timber didn’t just strike the vehicle — they pierced straight through the cab.

“Large pieces of timber pierced the cab of the victim’s truck,” authorities said, describing a violent scene that also caused damage to the trailer and even triggered a hazardous material spill.

When emergency crews arrived, Beauford was pronounced dead inside the wreckage.

The other driver, a 34-year-old man from Ocala, was not injured.

The aftermath shut down the busy roadway for nearly seven hours as multiple agencies worked to clear debris and contain the hazardous spill. Polk County Fire Rescue and road maintenance crews assisted in the massive cleanup effort.

Despite the horrifying outcome, officials say the semi-truck driver was in full compliance with safety regulations regarding the timber load.

The investigation remains ongoing, but authorities do not expect any criminal or civil charges to be filed.

What remains is a stark and tragic reminder of how quickly a normal drive can turn deadly — especially when heavy cargo and a single missed moment collide.
