President Donald Trump sparked fresh debate about his stamina and leadership style after revealing that he nearly “fell asleep” while reviewing potential names for a major military operation targeting Iran.
Speaking at a campaign-style rally in Kentucky on March 11, the 79-year-old president proudly told supporters that he personally selected the name “Operation Epic Fury” for the joint U.S.–Israel strike campaign against Iranian targets. But Trump also admitted that most of the suggested names left him unimpressed — and struggling to stay awake.
“As we take decisive action to stop the threat posed by the terrorist regime in Iran with Operation Epic Fury — isn’t that a great name?” Trump asked the crowd.
Supporters erupted in cheers.
“It’s only good if you win,” he added. “And we won. Let me say it clearly — we won. The whole thing was basically decided in the first hour.”
According to Trump, the naming process unfolded just hours before the operation began in late February. Military planners presented the president with a list of possible titles for the coordinated airstrikes targeting Iranian military infrastructure.
“They came in early in the morning,” Trump recalled. “They said, ‘Sir, you can choose the name of the operation.’”
Trump said he initially seemed confused.
“I said, ‘The name of what?’ And they said, ‘The name of the attack on Iran, sir.’”
The president then described flipping through a long list of options.
“They gave me about 20 names,” Trump said. “Honestly, I’m looking at them and I’m like, falling asleep. None of them were good.”
Then one option caught his attention.
“Then I see ‘Epic Fury,’” he said. “And I said, ‘I like that name. I like that name a lot.’”
Officials later confirmed the title was adopted as the official code name for the operation, which involved precision airstrikes coordinated with Israeli forces against Iranian military assets tied to regional proxy groups.
Trump’s comments quickly drew attention online, with critics raising new questions about the president’s age and energy level. Supporters, however, dismissed the remark as typical Trump humor and pointed to his famously demanding schedule.
Former White House physician Dr. Ronny Jackson previously said Trump has long functioned on minimal sleep.
“He’s just one of those people who does not require a lot of sleep,” Jackson said during Trump’s first presidency. “Four or five hours a night has been normal for him for most of his life.”
Trump has often bragged about his work habits, frequently describing himself as someone who operates on little rest while juggling meetings, briefings, rallies and travel.
Still, the president has been photographed appearing to close his eyes during lengthy meetings on several occasions during his second term.
In December 2025, cameras captured Trump sitting with his eyes shut during a marathon cabinet meeting that stretched for hours. Later that same month, photographers also snapped an image of him leaning back in the Oval Office after signing an executive order related to federal marijuana policy.
White House aides insisted at the time that the president had simply been “resting his eyes.”
Trump’s intense schedule is reportedly powered by an unusual daily routine — and a lot of caffeine.
Unlike many presidents, Trump does not drink coffee. Instead, aides say he prefers Diet Coke and can consume as many as a dozen cans per day.
During his first presidency, Trump famously installed a small red button on the Resolute Desk that summoned a staffer to deliver the drink.
Former staff members joked that the button looked like it might trigger a nuclear strike, but in reality it signaled the arrival of a chilled soda.
The president has often laughed about the setup.
“People think it’s the nuclear button,” Trump once quipped. “They get a little nervous when I press it.
Trump’s lighthearted admission about nearly nodding off during the naming process comes at a time when both parties are increasingly facing scrutiny over the age and health of political leaders.
At 79, Trump is one of the oldest presidents in U.S. history. His campaign has repeatedly insisted that he remains in strong physical and mental condition.
Trump himself brushed aside concerns during the rally.
“We’re working nonstop,” he told supporters. “Maybe sometimes you close your eyes for a second — but we’re getting the job done.”
And when it came to the name of the Iran operation, Trump made clear he had no doubts about his final choice.
“Epic Fury,” he said again with a grin. “That’s a winner.”
