A routine Southwest Airlines flight turned into a tense mid-air ordeal Friday night when a suspected security threat forced an emergency diversion to Atlanta — and a passenger was hauled off the plane by police in front of stunned travelers.

Southwest Flight 2094 had departed Nashville bound for Fort Lauderdale when the situation unfolded about 45 minutes into the trip. The plane abruptly changed course and landed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport shortly after 9 p.m.
Moments later, armed officers stormed the aircraft.
Video circulating on social media shows passengers raising their hands as police in tactical gear approached a man seated on the plane. Officers shouted commands before placing the passenger in handcuffs and dragging him down the aisle.
“Stand up. Let’s go. Stand up,” one officer can be heard yelling in the footage as frightened travelers looked on.
Several law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, including the Atlanta Police Department and the FBI.
Teen Passenger: “One of the scariest moments of my life”
Among those onboard was Sarah Porter, a 15-year-old from Tennessee who was traveling to Florida for spring break. She captured part of the incident on video and later posted it online.
“It was one of the scariest moments of my life,” Porter said in an interview.
She explained that passengers were initially told the aircraft would make an emergency landing but were given few details about what was happening.
“We were told we were going to land early, but nobody told us why,” she said. “Then the SWAT team showed up with their guns drawn.”
Porter said the man who was removed had been sitting just a few rows in front of her.
What triggered the scare
Authorities have not publicly explained why the passenger was removed, but witnesses on the flight described a tense exchange earlier in the trip.
According to Porter, the man became frustrated when a flight attendant told him his carry-on bag would not fit under the seat.
“He wasn’t yelling or anything,” she said. “But people were talking about how big his bag was, and the flight attendant told him it had to go in the overhead bin.”
At some point, passengers nearby reportedly noticed the man sending text messages that appeared threatening. One traveler alerted the flight crew, triggering the security response.
“I don’t know who he was texting or what he said,” Porter explained. “But it must have been serious enough for them to land the plane.”
A two-hour trip becomes a nine-hour ordeal
After the man was removed, passengers remained seated on the aircraft on the runway for more than an hour.
Police dogs were eventually brought in to search luggage. Travelers were then escorted off the plane and placed on buses while authorities inspected the aircraft.
The delays stretched the short flight into a long overnight ordeal.
Passengers were eventually transferred to another aircraft and finally arrived in Fort Lauderdale shortly before 4 a.m. Saturday — nearly nine hours after departing Nashville.
Officials say there was no real threat
In a statement, Southwest Airlines confirmed the aircraft was diverted due to what it described as a “possible security matter.”
The airline declined to provide further details, citing policies around security incidents.
Federal investigators later determined the situation did not pose a real danger.
“The FBI responded along with local law enforcement,” officials said. “There was no credible threat.”
Despite that conclusion, the frightening scene — captured on video and shared widely online — left many passengers shaken.
For Porter and others on the flight, the experience was unforgettable.
“You never expect something like that to happen when you’re just trying to go on vacation,” she said. “Everyone on that plane was terrified.”
