Could a national emergency stop the next round of elections?
That’s the question lighting up conservative and liberal corners of social media after former Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene said she could “see” President Donald Trump taking such a step — even as she blasted the idea as “insane.”
The firestorm began with a post on X from conservative podcaster Shannon Joy, who questioned Trump’s posture toward November’s midterms.
“Trump doesn’t seem to care about the midterms,” Joy wrote. “Who wants to bet he’ll declare a ‘national emergency’ because of Iran (or some other manufactured crisis) and try to cancel the elections in November?”
Greene didn’t dismiss the theory outright.
“Yeah, I could see it. INSANE,” she replied.
Her response immediately triggered backlash and debate. Critics accused her of fueling speculation. Supporters argued she was warning about unchecked executive power.
Greene, once one of Trump’s fiercest allies on Capitol Hill, has recently broken with the administration over escalating military action tied to Iran. The split has surprised many in Washington, where she built her brand around unapologetic loyalty to the president.
In a blistering post late last month, Greene claimed the White House circulated internal polling asking voters how many American casualties they would tolerate in a potential war with Iran.
“The Trump admin actually asked in a poll how many casualties voters were willing to accept in a war with Iran???” she wrote. “How about ZERO. We voted for America First and ZERO wars.”
She didn’t stop there.
“This is NOT freeing the Iranian people. This is murdering their children. AMERICA DOES NOT SUPPORT THIS.”
Her language was sharp. Her message was clear. No more foreign wars.
The controversy comes as Trump doubles down on recent U.S. strikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities. In a weekend interview, he insisted the operation was necessary.
Without joint U.S. and Israeli action, Trump said, Iran “would have had a nuclear weapon within two weeks.”
That claim raised eyebrows.
Sen. Ted Cruz offered a more cautious assessment during an appearance on CBS News.
“I don’t have present-day intelligence on what progress they had made toward rebuilding nuclear weapons since we bombed their facilities,” Cruz said. “I have no indication that they were anywhere close to getting nuclear weapons, because our bombing was devastating.”
He added that he urged Trump to act when the opportunity presented itself.
Still, the timeline remains murky. Intelligence details have not been publicly released. Lawmakers on both sides are pressing for briefings.
The speculation surrounding midterms gained additional traction because of comments Trump made earlier this year during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
As Zelenskyy discussed the difficulty of holding elections during wartime, Trump reportedly mused aloud.
“So you say, during the war, you can’t have elections,” he said. “So you mean if we happen to be in a war with somebody, no more elections. I wonder what the fake news would say to that.”
Legal experts point out that canceling or delaying federal elections would face enormous constitutional hurdles. Congress sets Election Day. States administer voting. Any attempt to override that system would almost certainly spark immediate court battles.
But in today’s hypercharged political climate, even hypotheticals carry weight.
Greene’s critics say her comment legitimizes an extreme scenario. Her allies argue she is highlighting concerns about executive overreach in times of crisis.
For now, the midterms remain on the calendar.
But as tensions abroad rise and political rhetoric intensifies at home, one thing is certain: the intersection of war powers and election law is no longer just an academic debate. It’s front and center in America’s political conversation.

That might start a revolution. With Trump in office, perhaps that is what we need!!! Dr. Schlatter
WHY does NextGen report MTG’s hallucinations instead of helping her get the psychiatric help she so sorely needs? MTG lost her mind long ago and hasn’t supported Good Trump in YEARS!
Trump has the support of the American PEOPLE which is higher than weak divided ineffectual Congress!
Schlatter can join MTG in psychological counseling…
No because we need him gone. He\’s destroying the US.
