Washington is bracing for another political firestorm.

Congressional Democrats are openly floating the possibility of hauling First Lady Melania Trump before the House Oversight Committee if they reclaim the majority in November. The warning comes as the long-running fallout from the Jeffrey Epstein scandal refuses to fade from the national spotlight.

Rep. Robert Garcia of California, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, stopped short of ruling it out during a tense CNN appearance Friday morning.

“We want the first lady, who we know had a relationship with, well, with Jeffrey Epstein, to come in under oath and testify to the oversight committee,” Garcia said. “That is the new precedent that Republicans wanted to set here.”

His remarks landed like a thunderclap.

Melania Trump has largely stayed out of the political crossfire surrounding Epstein, the disgraced financier who died in federal custody in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. But President Donald Trump, the current president, continues to face mounting calls from Democrats to answer questions under oath about any past interactions with Epstein.

The renewed attention follows a dramatic development this week: former First Lady Hillary Clinton was reportedly deposed as part of the same investigation, despite long maintaining she had never met Epstein. Democrats argue that if Republicans are willing to compel testimony from one former first lady, they cannot shield another from scrutiny.

“That is the standard they chose,” one Democratic aide familiar with committee strategy told reporters. “If you open that door, it swings both ways.”

Epstein’s web of high-powered connections has haunted Washington for years. The financier cultivated relationships with politicians, celebrities, academics, and billionaires. His longtime associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, was convicted in 2021 for her role in recruiting and grooming underage girls.

While Melania Trump has not been charged with any wrongdoing, some investigators have scrutinized past social overlaps within elite New York and Palm Beach circles in the early 2000s. Democrats say that understanding who knew what — and when — remains central to the broader accountability effort.

Republicans, however, are already signaling that any move to subpoena the first lady would be viewed as political retaliation.

“This is about headlines, not justice,” one GOP strategist said. “Dragging the first lady into a partisan fight would set a dangerous precedent.”

Legal experts note that compelling testimony from a sitting first lady would ignite a constitutional clash unlike any in recent memory. Although first ladies are private citizens, the political ramifications would be enormous.

The stakes are high. Control of the House in November could determine whether the Oversight Committee expands its probe or shuts it down entirely.

For now, Democrats are keeping their options open.

Garcia made that clear.

“We’re going to follow the facts,” he said. “No one is above accountability.”

    1. Some threatened evil Democrat tit-for-tat… of course, there’s really no Epstein victims… all those women were where they chose to be doing what they chose to do for whatever benefits they expected… now over the hill, they’re seeking a retirement fund for doing illegal/immoral activities…
