Former NFL MVP Cam Newton is once again in the headlines — but this time it’s not about football.
The 36-year-old father of nine ignited backlash this week after making controversial remarks about women and motherhood during an appearance on the It’s Giving podcast with host Sarah Fontenot.
“I just think that the reality to that answer is women’s value gets lower the more children that they have,” Newton said during the interview.
The comment immediately spread across social media, drawing criticism from fans and supporters alike.
Newton, however, made it clear he does not apply that belief to his current partner, comedian and actress Jasmin Brown, with whom he shares two children.
“I was having this conversation with one of the mothers of my children, and she’s still fine,” he said, referring to Brown.
He suggested the issue, in his view, isn’t about having children together — but about bringing children from previous relationships into a new one.
“But like I was telling her, I was like, ‘Yo, the guy that you’re dating or will date ain’t willing to love on these five children that you have, that ain’t the guy for you. Because when I came into your life, I was willing to accept you and whatever you had,’” Newton said.
He added, “There are guys that’s out there that’s just going to say, ‘Them ain’t my kids, I want you.’”
Newton’s remarks stand in sharp contrast to how passionately he has spoken about fatherhood in the past.
Before welcoming his ninth child in October 2025, Newton told People he remains open to expanding his family.
“I don’t know, wherever much that God gives me,” he said when asked how many more children he wants. “But jokingly, and not jokingly, they really give me my purpose… They’re my refuge. They’re my peace. They’re my encouragement.”
Newton shares:
• Five children with longtime ex-girlfriend Kia Proctor
• Two children with LaReina Shaw
• Two children with Jasmin Brown
Seven of the nine are his biological children. He is also the adoptive father of one child with Proctor and one with Shaw.
Newton rose to national fame after winning the NFL MVP award in 2015 while leading the Carolina Panthers to Super Bowl 50. He spent 11 seasons in the league between the Panthers and the New England Patriots before playing his final game in 2021.
Since retiring from the NFL, Newton has reinvented himself as a sports media personality. Most recently, he hosted “106 & Sports” on BET — a talk show that was canceled this week after just one season and eight episodes.
Newton’s comments tap into a long-running cultural debate about modern relationships, blended families, and how society values women and motherhood.
Some supporters argue he was speaking about dating realities. Others say his framing reduces women to a transactional “market value.”
As clips from the podcast continue to circulate, the backlash shows no signs of slowing down.
One thing is certain: Cam Newton knows how to keep people talking — even long after his playing days are over.
