Utah GOP Chairman Allegedly ‘Waterboarded’ His Terrified Teen Daughter

A Utah political leader is facing explosive accusations after his teenage daughter told police he allegedly held her head underwater in a bathroom sink as punishment for not cleaning her room “spotless.”

David Nephi Johnson, 54 — who had been serving as chairman of the Wasatch County Republican Party — was arrested on suspicion of aggravated child abuse following the disturbing claims.

According to a police report, the alleged incident began after Johnson’s 16-year-old daughter returned home from spending time with friends. He was reportedly furious that her bedroom wasn’t cleaned to his standards. What started as a verbal argument allegedly escalated into something far more frightening.

The teen told deputies her father grabbed her by the neck and dragged her into the bathroom, where he allegedly forced her head into a sink filled with water multiple times. She said she struggled to breathe for about 30 seconds and felt like she was drowning.

“I kind of felt sick afterwards,” she told officers. “Like I couldn’t breathe. So it made my stomach feel a little sick.”

After the ordeal, Johnson allegedly told her to go finish cleaning her room.

Officers noted in the report that the teen became visibly emotional while recounting the incident, crying as she described what happened. She also told investigators she no longer felt safe at home.

“When I go to bed, I feel like I can’t sleep because I don’t feel safe,” she said.

The teen further claimed this wasn’t the first time her father used extreme punishment. She alleged he had previously done something similar to her younger brother years ago and had hit her in the stomach in the past for not being “compliant.” She also claimed he mocked her when she cried.

Authorities determined Johnson posed what they described as “a substantial threat” to the younger children in the home. The 16-year-old was removed and placed in the care of an older sibling, while the two younger children remained with their mother.

In the wake of the arrest, the Wasatch County Republican Executive Committee released a statement saying members were “deeply troubled” by the allegations. The group announced that the vice chair would temporarily step into Johnson’s leadership role as the situation unfolds.

“We trust law enforcement and the legal system to conduct a thorough investigation,” the committee said, adding that the safety and well-being of children remain a top priority.

The case remains under active investigation.
