In a chilling start to the new year, a 93-year-old man in Fremont, California, is accused of fatally shooting his 86-year-old wife — and then calmly turning himself in to police.

According to authorities, Richard Hocking called 911 just after midnight Saturday with a shocking confession: he had just shot his wife in a parking lot on Mowry Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found the elderly couple inside a vehicle. The woman was in the front passenger seat, unresponsive, and pronounced dead at the scene. A firearm was recovered from the vehicle, and Hocking was immediately taken into custody.

Police say Hocking provided a full statement “articulating the reasoning behind the incident,” though they have not yet disclosed a motive.

The alleged killing marks Fremont’s first homicide of 2026 — and the unsettling circumstances have left residents in disbelief.

Hocking now faces homicide charges, along with a firearms enhancement. The investigation is still ongoing.
