What began as a routine White House Christmas reception on Sunday quickly turned into one of President Donald Trump’s strangest public appearances yet — complete with sweat, snakes, and an unsettling moment involving an Ivanka Trump lookalike.
According to guests in attendance, Trump, 79, was “glassy-eyed” and “visibly perspiring” as he drifted far from the teleprompter during his remarks to staffers, donors, and select media figures.
“[Peru] is known to be a rather rough place in terms of physical creatures crawling around,” Trump said suddenly, gripping the podium as cameras flashed. “Twenty-eight thousand people die a year from a snake bite, a certain snake. It’s a viper. They say it’s the most poisonous snake in the world.”
The claim drew puzzled looks from the crowd — and for good reason. Medical researchers say that fewer than a dozen snakebite deaths occur annually in Peru. The most venomous snake in the world is actually the inland taipan, found thousands of miles away in Australia.
One attendee, speaking on background, said, “You could see the aides looking at each other like, ‘What is happening right now?’ It was surreal.”
As Trump rambled on, he suddenly locked eyes with a woman near the front row and grinned.
“Boy, you look like Ivanka,” he told her, referencing his 44-year-old daughter. “Has anyone ever told you that? I’m looking and saying, ‘Is that Ivanka?’”
The room went quiet as Trump gestured toward the woman again. “Can you turn around for the camera?” he added, before asking the crowd, “Doesn’t she look like Ivanka? It’s the most unbelievable thing. You look just like Ivanka — which is a great compliment, actually.”
A White House staffer later told reporters, “You could feel the oxygen leave the room. It’s the kind of comment only Trump would make — and think it’s charming.”
This isn’t the first time Trump has publicly made remarks about his daughter that raised eyebrows. In past interviews, he’s described Ivanka as “one of the great beauties of the world” and once quipped on The View, “If Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her.”
The Sunday incident follows a pattern of increasingly erratic behavior at Trump’s public appearances since returning to office in 2025. Earlier this month, he drew scrutiny for slurring words during a speech in Palm Beach and wandering away from the podium before Secret Service agents guided him back.
Political analyst Dr. Lena Karr told Politico, “We’re seeing more frequent departures from the teleprompter, more tangents that have nothing to do with policy or events. It’s concerning behavior for someone occupying the Oval Office.”
Before leaving the stage on Sunday, Trump again claimed he “won California” in the 2024 election — a state he lost by more than five million votes — and promised that “truckloads of evidence” would soon prove widespread voter fraud.
The White House did not respond to requests for comment.
The outburst comes amid mounting questions about the president’s physical and cognitive health. Reports from The New York Times and CNN in recent weeks cited anonymous White House aides who described Trump as “increasingly forgetful” and “easily agitated.”
“He’s obsessed with proving he’s still sharp,” said one former campaign adviser. “But moments like this don’t help that argument.”
Trump, meanwhile, has lashed out at coverage of his health, calling it “fake news garbage.” During a phone interview last week, he insisted, “I’m in better shape than anyone. People can’t believe my energy. They’re amazed. Doctors tell me they’ve never seen anything like it.”
As the event wrapped up, staff hurried to usher guests toward the exit while aides helped Trump down from the stage.
One attendee summed it up bluntly: “It felt like watching a live broadcast of whatever’s going on in his head — and it wasn’t pretty.”
