What began as a night of small-town pride ended in bloodshed when a Mississippi high school homecoming celebration erupted in gunfire, leaving at least four people dead and a dozen more injured.
The chaos unfolded just after midnight on Saturday, Oct. 11, in Leland — a quiet Delta community shaken to its core. Witnesses say the celebration following Leland High School’s homecoming game against Charleston High turned into a scene of panic when multiple gunshots rang out near the crowd.
“It was supposed to be a night of unity,” Leland Mayor John Lee told reporters early Saturday. “Instead, it became one of the darkest nights in our city’s history.”
Teen in Custody After Deadly Shooting
Police have confirmed that 18-year-old Tylar Jarod Goodloe is now in custody in connection with the mass shooting. Authorities have not yet revealed what charges he may face, but they’re urging anyone with footage or information to come forward as the investigation expands statewide.
Law enforcement sources told Desoto County News that multiple agencies — including the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation — are assisting with interviews and evidence collection.
At least four victims were airlifted to regional trauma centers, though officials have not disclosed their conditions. The identities of the deceased have not been publicly released pending notification of family members.
City Declares State of Emergency
In the immediate aftermath, Mayor Lee declared a state of emergency, ordering a citywide curfew to help authorities control the situation and prevent further violence.
In a Facebook post to residents, the mayor wrote, “I’m deeply saddened about the tragedy that happened in the City of Leland. Due to the tragedy and for the safety of others, the block party is canceled!”
A Violent Weekend Across Mississippi
The Leland massacre came just hours after another deadly shooting rocked a high school football field three hours away in Heidelberg, Mississippi. Two people were killed in that incident, which took place during Heidelberg High School’s own Friday night game.
Heidelberg Mayor Robert Barnett issued a somber statement: “The City of Heidelberg will be in full cooperation with law enforcement, and we will pursue the person responsible to the fullest extent of the law.”
Investigators have not said whether the two shootings are related, but the timing and proximity have left communities across the state rattled.
Witnesses Describe Chaos
Residents who attended the Leland homecoming described confusion and terror as families scattered for cover.
“We were dancing one minute — and then people just started screaming,” said 19-year-old local Alexis Brown. “I dropped my drink and ran. You could hear bullets hitting cars.”
Video shared on social media shows flashing police lights, overturned chairs, and terrified onlookers as ambulances rushed to the scene.
Ongoing Investigation
As of Saturday evening, Leland police had not released an official motive. The FBI and Mississippi State Police are said to be assisting with digital evidence analysis, including surveillance footage from nearby homes and businesses.
“This was a community event,” one officer told CBS News. “Kids were out here, families were out here. Whoever did this shattered that sense of safety for everyone.”
Authorities continue to interview witnesses and review cellphone videos that captured the chaos.
