A quiet afternoon turned into a nightmare for one Forward Township family when a school bus barreled into their home Monday afternoon, leveling the porch and leaving the house unlivable.
The crash happened just after 3:30 p.m. on Rainbow Run Road, a winding two-lane stretch in Forward Township, about 20 miles south of Pittsburgh. According to local authorities, a bus from Rittenhouse Bus Lines struck a parked pickup truck before smashing through the front of the home.
Joe Ferson, who lives in the house with his daughter, said the impact sounded “like a freight train” before the walls began to shake.
“I hear this commotion, and the next thing I know, the walls of my house are lifting off the ground,” Ferson told reporters at the scene. “My truck’s in my living room, water’s spraying everywhere — I step outside, and there’s a bus in my house.”
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, where they found the yellow bus jammed halfway into the structure, its front end buried in debris. No children were on board at the time, but the driver — whose name has not yet been released — was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Neighbors said the noise could be heard from blocks away. “It sounded like an explosion,” one resident told CBS Pittsburgh. “We all ran outside thinking something had blown up.”
The Red Cross was called in to assist the displaced family as inspectors from Forward Township’s building department assessed the extensive structural damage. Officials said the home is likely unsafe to occupy for now.
Rittenhouse Bus Lines has not yet commented on what caused the crash. Investigators are expected to review mechanical records and road conditions, as well as whether the driver suffered a medical episode behind the wheel.
Local residents say Rainbow Run Road has long been a concern due to tight turns and limited visibility. “It’s not the first time there’s been a bad accident here,” one neighbor added. “But never something like this.”
Authorities plan to release more details as the investigation continues.
