What was meant to be a glittering celebration of women in music turned into a stunning act of defiance against Disney, as top artists and actors boycotted the entertainment giant in protest of its decision to pull Jimmy Kimmel off the air.

At Sunday night’s premiere of Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery, Sarah McLachlan and Jewel stunned attendees by refusing to perform. Both women had been teased as the “surprise musical acts” for the event. Instead, McLachlan grabbed the microphone and delivered a fiery statement.

“We’ve collectively decided not to perform,” she told the audience. “This is about standing in solidarity for free speech. We cannot pretend everything is normal when voices are being silenced.”

The crowd erupted in applause. Many attendees later described the moment as “chilling” and “brave.”

The protest didn’t stop there. The red carpet—where McLachlan, Jewel, and director Ally Pankiw were scheduled to meet the press—was mysteriously canceled just hours before. Journalists were informed in a late-night email: “Please note this event will no longer be hosting a red carpet.”

Without explanation, Disney stripped away the glitz and silenced the music. By showtime, even the scheduled performance had vanished. Attendees were left with only a reception.

“It felt like Disney wanted to bury the story,” one insider told reporters.

The boycott is snowballing. Cynthia Nixon, Marisa Tomei, Tatiana Maslany, and even Lost creator Damon Lindelof have gone public with their anger—urging fans to cancel their Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions.

“I just cancelled mine,” Nixon announced on Instagram. “We’d miss our shows, but we’d miss the First Amendment a whole lot more.”

Maslany was even more blunt: “Cancel your Disney+ subscriptions now!”

Lindelof said he won’t work with Disney again if Kimmel’s suspension isn’t lifted. “Ask yourself if you know the difference between hate speech and a joke,” he wrote. “I think you still do.”

Over the weekend, crowds gathered outside Disneyland carrying signs that read: “Don’t bow to Trump’s bullies” and “Free speech isn’t optional.”

The demonstrations erupted after Jimmy Kimmel Live! was yanked from the air following conservative backlash to jokes Kimmel made about President Trump’s grief for slain right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. The move has fueled fears that corporations are bending to political intimidation under Trump’s presidency.

Former Disney CEO Michael Eisner blasted his old company, calling the move “out-of-control intimidation” and warning, “Where has all the leadership gone?”

Ironically, the premiere film itself was designed to celebrate defiance. Lilith Fair, which McLachlan launched in the ’90s, broke barriers by proving female-led lineups could dominate ticket sales.

“Lilith proved so many people wrong who didn’t think the world would support women’s voices,” Jewel reflected online.

On Sunday, McLachlan reminded the crowd of that history. “If Lilith taught me anything, it’s that we are strongest when we stand together,” she said. “And tonight, we stand for free speech.”
