Federal investigators say they have found no evidence linking the man accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk to any organized left-wing group—directly contradicting claims from President Trump’s allies who have rushed to blame “antifa” and other leftist movements.

Three senior Justice Department officials told NBC News that 22-year-old Tyler Robinson acted alone when he allegedly gunned down Kirk earlier this month at a Utah Valley University event. “Thus far, there is no evidence connecting the suspect with any left-wing groups,” one official said. “Every indication is this was one guy who did one really bad thing because he found Kirk’s ideology personally offensive.”

The officials added that because the crime occurred in Utah and Robinson was a state resident, bringing federal charges could be challenging. “Kirk was a political influencer, not a government official,” another official noted, underscoring the limits of federal jurisdiction.

A Tragedy Turned Political Weapon

Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, built his career amplifying pro-Trump politics and railing against “woke” culture on college campuses. His assassination at age 31 has become a rallying cry for Trump loyalists, who are demanding sweeping federal crackdowns on perceived leftist threats.

Just days after the shooting, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller appeared on a tribute episode of The Charlie Kirk Show, hosted by Vice President JD Vance. Miller promised vengeance:

“With God as my witness, we are going to use every resource we have at the Department of Justice, Homeland Security, and throughout this government to identify, disrupt, dismantle and destroy these networks and make America safe again. We will do it in Charlie’s name.”

Trump has also renewed calls to officially label “antifa” a domestic terror organization—despite the fact that antifa is not an actual organization but rather a loose collection of activists without central leadership.

The Suspect’s Motives

Court filings show that Robinson’s own mother, a Republican, told investigators her son had recently been “moving to the left.” Prosecutors revealed text messages in which Robinson told his transitioning partner that he was disgusted by what he called Kirk’s “hatred.”

Still, investigators stress that personal grievances—not a broader network—appear to have motivated the attack.

Selective Outrage and Scrubbed Studies

The Trump administration’s narrative is being undercut by inconvenient facts. Studies from both the Justice Department and the Anti-Defamation League have consistently shown that right-wing extremists have carried out more than ten times as many terror attacks as left-wing extremists since 2002.

Notably, a DOJ study confirming those numbers was quietly removed from the department’s website earlier this year, just as Trump escalated his rhetoric against left-wing activists.

What Comes Next

For now, the Justice Department has declined official comment, citing the ongoing investigation. But legal experts warn that Trump’s promises of an “antifa crackdown” may be more political theater than enforceable policy.

“Antifa is not the IRA or al-Qaeda—it’s a loose label for people who oppose fascism,” said Mary McCord, a former DOJ official. “You can’t dismantle an ideology with federal task forces.”

Still, the White House appears determined to exploit Kirk’s murder to justify sweeping crackdowns. The risk, critics say, is that the administration will use the tragedy not to prevent future violence—but to silence dissent.

  1. I never read a single place anyone said he was tied to a leftwing group. However, Jimmy Kimmel stated the assassin was MAGA.
It’s just the opposite of what you wrote.

    1. I never heard any leftist group or for that matter Antifa even mentioned. What I saw and heard was his leftist ideologies were to blame and possibly the hate rhetoric the left spews. Again the way things are written will be the way people take it in this instance it tries to make the right and Trump even though not mentioned look like liars even though it never says it we all know the intent of these types of headlines. Also when they say 3 officials but no names should raise eyebrows.

  2. Everything I’ve read refers to him changing in two years. I’m curious about what was happening in his life 14 – 20 years old.
