After six decades of bringing Americans trusted, ad-free journalism, educational programs, and iconic voices like Mr. Rogers and Big Bird, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) is officially shutting its doors—brought down not by ratings or relevance, but by a calculated and ruthless Republican takedown.

The final nail in the CPB’s coffin came Friday, as the nonprofit confirmed it would cease operations on September 30. The announcement follows President Donald Trump’s successful passage of a sweeping rescissions bill that clawed back $9 billion in previously approved federal spending—including $1.1 billion earmarked for the CPB over the next two years.

“This is a dark day for American media and democracy,” said CPB President Patricia Harrison in a solemn statement. “Despite the extraordinary efforts of millions of Americans who called, wrote, and petitioned Congress to preserve federal funding for CPB, we now face the difficult reality of closing our operations.”

President Trump wasted no time gloating. “REPUBLICANS HAVE TRIED DOING THIS FOR 40 YEARS, AND FAILED… BUT NO MORE,” he posted triumphantly on Truth Social. The CPB, which he has repeatedly called a “liberal propaganda machine,” had been in Trump’s crosshairs since he returned to office in 2024. He even attempted to illegally remove three CPB board members—an effort that, while initially rebuffed in court, ended with a whimper as the corporation dropped its lawsuit Friday, signaling its surrender.

Founded in 1967 under the Public Broadcasting Act, the CPB has been a cornerstone of public life—providing funding and support to more than 1,500 local NPR and PBS stations nationwide. While urban centers may have the resources to survive, the loss of federal support is expected to decimate rural stations and cut off access to independent news, arts, and children’s programming in underserved communities.

NPR CEO Katherine Maher warned of a national unraveling: “The ripple effects of this closure will be felt across every public media organization and, more importantly, in every community across the country that relies on public broadcasting.”

Roughly 100 CPB staff positions will be eliminated when the money runs out this fall. A small transition team will remain through January 2026 to oversee the final shutdown.

The CPB’s demise doesn’t just threaten political coverage—it threatens culture itself. For decades, PBS shows like Nova, Frontline, and PBS NewsHour have served as educational lifelines and watchdogs for truth. NPR’s journalism has repeatedly held power to account—something that likely made it a prime target for defunding under the Trump administration.

“This isn’t just an attack on liberal media,” said Craig Aaron, co-CEO of media watchdog group Free Press. “It’s the dismantling of a democratic institution. They have trashed decades of democracy-building work and will deny many journalists, artists, educators and creators the opportunity to be heard.”

Some public media leaders are already shifting the conversation to rebuilding. In Boston, GBH (one of the largest public media stations in the country) erected a banner outside its headquarters last month that summed up the mood: “Local. Trusted. Defunded.”

“We’re not backing down,” GBH declared in a fundraising push. “But we can’t do it without you.”

Others are more cautious. Many stations are scrambling to secure alternative sources of revenue, brace for staff layoffs, and reconfigure programming amid a bleak funding future.

Aaron remains hopeful the death of CPB could plant seeds for a new kind of public media—one rooted in communities and independent of federal politics.

“Public media can—and must—be reborn as a bulwark against authoritarianism that meets the civic needs of all our communities,” he said.

But for now, the airwaves are growing quieter. And in Trump’s America, that silence might be the point.

  1. Might want to check your article title for typos! It’s “CPB” not “CBP” (which is Custom and Border Patrol).

  2. A free press as envisioned by our founding fathers was not to be funded by the government and essentially being a state sponsored press! This shut down is in accordance with our constitution and the need for a smaller and less intrusive government! Not a government that taxes everyone to support a select group!

A free impartial press should not be beholden to the federal government or anyone else. Nor should all taxpayers be forced to pay for a press whose views do not comport with their own!

Goodbye and good riddance! Now onto more cuts in our bloated Federal Government! Let’s stop our politicians on the right or the left from using our tax dollars to create special programs to buy voters!

    1. LOL Whenever we the name on this comment … we know it is a orange worshipping maga dummy. Veteran and former law enforcement here. We all need to start speaking the truth, more … as in these End Times, these traitorous liars and deceivers will slither across every comment site to vomit their ignorance. May they and their orange cult leader soon be a thing of the past!

      1. You can pack up and leave if u don’t like it here. Go to Russia. They’re looking for unhappy people

  3. Total BS. This is and has always been a left leaning piece of garbage. They can stay open just not at taxpayers expense!

  4. WHY is CPB shutting down? It claimed only 10% of it’s funding was from Govt! Did its 90% private funding donors also stop? Maybe if it learned USA is a long lived REPUBLIC and not a short lived “democracy”/Communism, it could keep going… No one will miss lying PBS NewsHour… no more “gun violence” lies… no more George Floyd was murdered lies…

    1. Now they can build the big ball room for all the rich to go to to the house that looks like a car dealership with its giant flag

  5. Trump is turning us into a police state. He is a spoiled rich brat destroying so much of what we hold dear, reallly Mr.Rogers and many beloved programs.

He breaks what he does not like…..our very democracy and and laws, so he can become a royal dictator and make our proud country a joke in the rest of the world.

    1. Whatever the king/dictator finds offensive, he destroys! We are fast becoming a police state, and viewed as pathetic by the rest of the world.

Poor Donnie, the spoiled little rich brat, finds Mr. Rodgers offensive.

    2. Will you ever learn USA is a long lived REPUBLIC and not a short lived “democracy”? Then maybe you can also understand everything else Good Trump does…

  6. Trusted journalism? As with most of the media, journalism is not involved, only left-wing propaganda, no matter how evil or far fetched. The corporation for public broadcasting, like over 90% of the media, is pure bigotry and hatred, without a shred of truth to be found within it.

  7. He shuts down such good things like this. He shuts down tv shows he doesn’t like. What happened to free speech? Why shut down something like sesame street? Its been around forever, great educational show. How about shut down your plans? Ruined the rose garden, wants to change the white house wth all the history. How about the idea of building a dinner and dance building for 40,000+? How many real tax payers will ever be able to use or be invited. Spend your time on meaningful plans for us taxpayers. Stop using your huge ego, stop saying so many I did this, I’m the best. Come on! You personally have no problem with money. Yet, all the taxpayers that build the government are doing badly. They have to go hungry, barely paying bills, losing their homes, weighing should they eat and feed their children or buy medication. We the people need more from their government. Get rid of all these old members of house and senate and all the other sections. Some are so old and living in the past, they aren’t thinking of how different it is nowadays. They did their time and extremely more than they should have. You serve your term and then are voted on again. Why are they in there for years? It wasn’t supposed to be a life position. Mic drop
