In a moment that legal experts are calling a “dangerous stunt,” President Donald Trump shared an AI-generated video Sunday showing the fake arrest of former President Barack Obama — a provocative move critics say is designed to deflect from his own brewing scandals, including renewed backlash over the Epstein files.

Trump’s post comes just days after the Department of Justice quietly confirmed there will be no further charges related to the Jeffrey Epstein case and once again denied the existence of a long-rumored “client list.” The memo infuriated survivors’ advocates and even members of Trump’s base, many of whom believe a cover-up is underway.

Instead of addressing the growing discontent, Trump shifted the spotlight — reposting a dramatic, AI-created video showing Obama being taken into custody. The timing raised immediate alarms.

“This is political theater, not justice,” said Gene Rossi, a former federal prosecutor. “It’s a shiny object meant to distract Americans from asking the real question: What did Trump know about Epstein, and when?”

The AI video was paired with claims made in a new report by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, alleging — without solid evidence — that Obama’s administration fabricated intelligence about Russian interference in the 2016 election. Gabbard’s report has not been backed by any mainstream intelligence or law enforcement agency.

“There is absolutely no legal basis for prosecuting Obama,” said Neama Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor. “The Durham investigation turned up nothing. The statute of limitations has long passed. This is pure political fodder.”

Michael McAuliffe, another former federal prosecutor, called the post a “calculated media trap.”

Gabbard’s report hinges on selective intelligence briefings and internal emails that suggest the Obama White House downplayed Russia’s ability to hack vote counts. But even her own citations show that while Russia may not have changed votes, it certainly influenced the 2016 election — a conclusion backed by the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee in 2020.

“These documents detail a treasonous conspiracy,” Gabbard wrote, echoing Trump’s own rhetoric. But experts across the aisle are calling her claims exaggerated at best and deceptive at worst.

Senator Mark Warner (D-VA), the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, didn’t mince words: “It seems DNI Gabbard is unaware that our committee unanimously found Russia directed extensive cyber activity to help Donald Trump. That’s not a conspiracy — that’s a fact.”

Critics say Trump’s Justice Department — led by Attorney General Pam Bondi, a longtime loyalist — is already dangerously politicized. Some fear Bondi may pursue Gabbard’s baseless accusations against Obama just to score political points before the 2026 midterms.

“Pam Bondi acts less like an attorney general and more like Trump’s personal defense lawyer,” Rossi warned.

Peter Zeidenberg, another former prosecutor, dismissed the idea of prosecuting Obama entirely: “There’s no evidence. No charges. No case. Just noise.”

Despite Trump’s attempts to change the subject, pressure is mounting over how his administration handled the Epstein investigation. Trump recently told supporters to “move past the Jeffrey Epstein hoax” — a phrase that infuriated survivors and drew rare public rebuke from some conservative allies.

“It’s not a hoax when powerful men got away,” said Elisa Ricci, an advocate for trafficking victims. “We expected this from politicians. But to hear it from a sitting president? It’s a betrayal.”

And while Trump continues to fan conspiracy theories about his predecessors, critics say the real accountability may still come from those demanding answers about what happened in that Manhattan jail cell in 2019.

Gabbard says she’s turning over documents to the DOJ for potential charges. But legal experts remain skeptical anything will come of it — except more headlines designed to energize Trump’s base.

“This isn’t about justice,” said Rahmani. “It’s about distraction. Plain and simple.”
