In a jaw-dropping moment that managed to both enrage and amuse the internet, Vice President JD Vance claimed that President Donald Trump has “done more to save Black lives than any leader in our country.”

The bizarre comment, posted Friday night on the left-leaning social media platform Bluesky, instantly lit up with disbelief.

“I’m sure the leaders and supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement will join me in celebrating President Trump today,” Vance wrote, tagging New York Times columnist Jamelle Bouie. “He has done more to save Black lives than any leader in our country.”

This statement, stunning in both its tone-deafness and historical revisionism, appears to be Vance’s latest attempt to soften the image of a president whose record on race has been roundly condemned by civil rights advocates, historians, and the communities most impacted.

Vance’s comment came in response to a post he made touting Trump’s role in a recently brokered peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. The treaty—still in its infancy—is expected to reduce regional violence, but many experts caution that crediting Trump is misleading.

“The framework for this peace deal was developed by diplomats and NGOs years before Trump returned to office,” said Dr. Asha N’Dour, a Georgetown foreign policy analyst. “Trump didn’t derail it—that’s about the extent of his contribution.”

The deal may help prevent future deaths in Central Africa, but Vance’s leap from that diplomatic footnote to claiming Trump saved Black lives globally—and then connecting it to Black Americans—left many wondering if the Vice President was trolling or just delusional.

Users on Bluesky, where Vance has just over 14,000 followers, wasted no time tearing the post apart.

“You really thought that one would fly? Trump is the guy who gassed peaceful Black Lives Matter protesters in Lafayette Square for a photo op,” one user wrote.

“Imagine lying this hard just to stay relevant,” said another.

Others pointed to the Trump administration’s long record of slashing funding to USAID, housing programs, and public health services that disproportionately affect Black communities. Some cited the gutting of civil rights enforcement, Trump’s defense of Confederate symbols, and his inflammatory rhetoric following the murder of George Floyd.

“He called Black protesters ‘thugs’ and defended white supremacists in Charlottesville. Now we’re supposed to believe he’s a civil rights icon?” one user added.

Vance has spent the past week posting provocative messages on Bluesky, a platform dominated by progressive and left-leaning users. Some believe he joined the network solely to stir outrage. He even sarcastically congratulated Zohran Mamdani, the democratic socialist who just won New York City’s mayoral primary, calling him “the new leader of the Democratic Party.”

There was no mention of Mamdani—or Trump’s “Black lives” legacy—on Vance’s much larger X (formerly Twitter) account, where he boasts millions of followers. Critics say it’s part of a deliberate digital strategy to provoke liberal backlash while remaining insulated from MAGA scrutiny.

“Vance is playing both sides,” said political strategist Maya Solis. “He uses lefty spaces to appear bold and edgy, but avoids repeating these stunts in front of his own base—because even they know it’s nonsense.”

While Vance tries to craft a narrative of global saviorhood, the numbers tell a different story.

  • Trump rolled back Obama-era police reforms.
  • He slashed fair housing rules designed to combat segregation.
  • He called for the death penalty for the Central Park Five—long after they were exonerated.
  • He opposed renaming military bases named after Confederate generals.
  • And he repeatedly downplayed COVID-19 as it ravaged Black communities in 2020.

“This administration isn’t about saving Black lives,” said Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) on Saturday. “It’s about saving face.”

Vice President Vance’s effort to recast Trump as a global champion of Black lives may have played well in Mar-a-Lago—but on the national stage, it’s being met with ridicule, resistance, and receipts. If this is the new GOP message heading into the 2026 midterms, Democrats say: bring it on.

  1. You guys are so out of touch! Black people don’t need handouts THEY NEED OPPORTUNITY AS FO WE ALL! And that’s what Trump bring,,,not losing our jobs because he’s bought off by the CCP who cheats and steals our track and subduduz

  2. Their industries until they force ours to close making Americans unemployed!!! Biden 170 SAR reports from all the influence offline his family and he gave done!!!

  3. Vance is 100% correct.
For the doubters do your research.
No President Trump did not gasse BLM for photo op. BLM were being moved back because these people were hurting cops remember. Oh we’re not supposed to mention how many cops and secret security where hurt in the so called summer of love. Remember we were are in lock down except these so called peaceful protest that destroyed communities, monuments, churches, businesses not to mention cop shops, cop cars and cops. Now let’s remember Charlottesville. How many times are you people going to lie about what President Trump actually said. But as usual lier’s are out and about. Now back to what Voting VP Vance said. Democrats have used black Americans for years. Democrats promised a lot of things to them and never delivered. Black Americans were threatened in many ways by democrats. From taking their welfare away to the threat this last election with the TV ad. In the ad it told the black communities that democrats would name people publicly on how they voted if they voted republican. Not to mention letters they would receive in mail other elections. Democrats controlled them with welfare and threats if didn’t vote for them. Then in 2021 democrats needed to rein them back in so created DEI to buy back their votes. Democrats have used and controlled these communities for years. Think about whose communities where destroyed after GFloyd. Democrats did the damage to gain back control of you. Who was out protesting with masks, back packs filled with harm objects, who did democrats bail out? Mostly white rich kids and paid gamers living in basement of parents. Just for a little history lesson. Republicans freed slaves and gave them and their children citizenship. It was democrats who paid to bring them to the USA and enslave them for sole purpose of slave labor, nanny’s, maids, butler’s and someone to take their frustrations out on. That’s a fact. Now democrats want black Americans to receive reparation’s from republicans who freed them? Democrats played the race card anytime it benefited them, just like when then they had to get their vote over the years. Only problem with the race card this time it didn’t work for so many. Democrats said no voter ID because they didn’t have ability to to get one. BULL. LIE. You no matter your race has had to have an ID to get a lot of things like, liquor, concert tickets, fly, drive, school, cigarettes, turn on utilities, get a car, rent or buy a home, a job and so many more things. Democrats promised them a lot of things and didn’t deliver. President Trump promised and delivered. No one could hold even just a family funeral during Covid yet they attended a four day funeral for a criminal. Answer me this one question. Where you better off the eight years under Obama and four years under Biden or for three years under President Trump until democrats and Fauci destroyed everything unleashing the Covid virus and who actually is working for you the people?
