A sunny afternoon at Lake St. Clair turned into a real-life action scene Sunday when a helicopter crash sent panicked diners sprinting from a popular Michigan waterfront restaurant.
Just before 6 p.m., a red chopper attempted to land in a vacant lot beside Cabana Blue, a bustling spot known for its lakeside views and summer crowds. But instead of a smooth touchdown, the helicopter lurched forward, spun out of control, and slammed onto its side—its blades whipping up a massive cloud of dust and debris straight toward the restaurant’s outdoor patio.
“I heard this roar, looked up, and saw the helicopter just spinning. People were screaming and running everywhere,” said Jamie Allen Burnham, who was dining just feet away from the chaos. “It was like something out of a movie.”
Security video quickly circulated online, showing the tail of the aircraft tilting skyward as the spinning blades showered terrified customers with dirt. Many diners bolted for cover, leaving behind food, drinks, and phones in their scramble to get away.
Remarkably, no one was hurt in the crash. First responders rushed to the scene, while stunned witnesses tried to process what they’d just seen. “It could have been a disaster,” said one employee of Cabana Blue. “We’re just grateful nobody got hurt.”
According to Clay Township police, the helicopter was privately owned. The pilot’s identity has not been released, and the cause of the crash is under investigation. Officials say the Federal Aviation Administration is now involved.
Lake St. Clair, popular for its boating and summer nightlife, has never seen a scene quite like this. As one local put it, “It’s usually the best seat in the house. Today, it was the scariest.”
Authorities are urging anyone with additional video or information about the crash to contact Clay Township Police. The investigation is ongoing.
