Backlash Over CBS Star’s Viral Warnings About Trump (Video)

Scott Pelley’s Wake Forest address ignites MAGA backlash as the veteran journalist calls out fear, censorship, and the assault on truth—without ever saying Trump’s name.

A calm, gray-haired journalist set off a firestorm in MAGA circles this week, and he didn’t even say the name “Trump.”

CBS 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley, speaking before the graduating class at Wake Forest University, delivered a pointed speech on May 19 that painted a chilling portrait of modern America—where, he warned, truth is under siege and fear is silencing voices.

“Journalism is under attack. Universities are under attack. Freedom of speech is under attack,” Pelley declared to an auditorium packed with students and their families. “And insidious fear is reaching through our schools, our businesses, our homes, and into our private thoughts.”

The comments, which made no direct reference to President Donald Trump, were instantly interpreted as a blistering rebuke of the administration’s ongoing battles with the press, academia, and political dissent.

Online, right-wing outrage erupted.

A viral post from the MAGA-aligned “Western Lensman” X account mocked Pelley as a “self-important, sermonizing propagandist,” garnering more than 2.3 million views. Others accused the journalist of hijacking a celebratory moment for a political tirade.

“Pelley’s speech was pure Trump Derangement Syndrome on parade,” posted one popular pro-Trump account with over 200,000 followers. “Wake Forest should be ashamed.”

A Long-Running War Between Trump and CBS

The backlash comes amid escalating tensions between CBS and the Trump administration.

Just weeks ago, Trump filed a $20 billion lawsuit against the network, alleging it deceptively edited a 2024 interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris to favor his opponent ahead of the presidential election. CBS released the full footage after public pressure, denying any wrongdoing and calling the lawsuit “without merit.”

The network’s defense didn’t stop the attacks. Trump loyalists have continued to frame CBS as a weapon of the so-called “liberal elite,” accusing its journalists of pushing anti-Trump narratives under the guise of objectivity.

In a separate bombshell last month, Pelley took aim at CBS’s parent company, Paramount, suggesting the corporate giant was toning down the show’s editorial independence to smooth over a planned merger with Skydance Media. The deal requires approval from federal regulators—many of whom now answer to Trump.

“Our parent company, Paramount, is trying to complete a merger,” Pelley revealed on air. “The Trump administration must approve it. Paramount began to supervise our content in new ways.”

He added that while no story had been officially blocked, veteran 60 Minutes producer Bill Owens resigned over what he saw as creeping interference.

“Bill felt he lost the independence that honest journalism requires,” Pelley said.

Democracy, Dissent, and Graduation Day

Wake Forest University, for its part, stood by Pelley. In a statement, the school called his remarks “urgent, hopeful, and a powerful defense of democratic ideals.”

The speech has since ricocheted across social media, splitting public opinion along predictably partisan lines.

For critics of Trump, Pelley’s words echoed a broader concern—that a second Trump term is chilling free expression, intimidating the press, and punishing dissent, especially in universities, where political interference has escalated.

Trump recently attacked Harvard University on Truth Social, accusing it of “wokeness warfare” and threatening to cut federal funding over what he described as “radical liberal indoctrination.”

Pelley’s speech, while indirect, left no doubt where he stood.

“To move forward, we debate, not demonize; we discuss, not destroy,” he told the graduates. “But in this moment, our sacred rule of law is under attack.”

A Battle Line Drawn in Cap and Gown

Whether Pelley’s message was meant as a call to action or simply a reflection on journalism in peril, it now finds itself at the center of a fierce cultural battle.

As one Trump supporter wrote online, “Liberals who once controlled the narrative are now losing it—and throwing tantrums.”

For others, Pelley’s speech was a rare voice of courage in an increasingly censored America.

“Let the graduates hear the truth,” one user posted. “Even if it makes the MAGA world squirm.”
