Kathleen Buhle, the former wife of Hunter Biden, has officially moved on—and this time, it’s with a man far removed from the political chaos that once engulfed her life. On May 10, Los Angeles became the backdrop for a new chapter as art historian and Johns Hopkins lecturer Nik Apostolides popped the question. She said yes.
The engagement was first reported by Politico’s Playbook, but sources close to the couple confirm the romance has been quietly blooming for months. Despite first crossing paths 15 years ago at a Washington, D.C., party, Buhle and Apostolides only reconnected romantically earlier this year.
“I never imagined love could feel this peaceful,” Buhle reportedly told a friend after the proposal.
Now 56, Buhle has weathered her share of storms. Married to Hunter Biden for over two decades, she watched her then-husband—the youngest son of President Joe Biden—battle substance abuse, spiral through public scandal, and ultimately shatter their family with a now-infamous affair involving his late brother’s widow, Hallie Biden. Buhle’s candid 2022 memoir If We Break laid bare the pain and betrayal that defined her final years with Hunter.
The book didn’t just grab headlines—it reportedly drew sharp private disapproval from some within the Democratic elite. Former First Lady Michelle Obama, a close friend of Buhle’s, was said to be “deeply disappointed” by how Buhle was pushed aside by the Biden family following the couple’s 2017 divorce.
“She was treated like collateral damage,” one D.C. insider told us. “Michelle had a front-row seat to Kathleen’s strength through all of it.”
The memoir also revealed the emotional toll of Hunter’s collapse after the 2015 death of his brother, Beau Biden. Buhle described trying to hold their family together while navigating his addiction and infidelity, all while raising their three daughters—Naomi, Finnegan, and Maisy—largely on her own.
As if the personal trauma weren’t enough, Buhle was diagnosed with colon cancer shortly after the split. By 2022, however, she was declared cancer-free—another hard-fought victory in a life filled with them.
Today, Buhle serves as the CEO of The House at 1229, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering women through community and mentorship. Friends say her new fiancé, Apostolides, has brought “a deep sense of calm” into her life.

i wish her the best. sounds like she’s very happy. i’d like to say don’t take what happened w/the biden family as a rebuke, but it was. don’t think they meant it that way. when divorce happens, for whatever reasons, families run in to support THEIR family member, w/o fully realizing how much that is hurting the mother/father of their grandchildren. they’ll get it later, just not a for a while. we we’re that way with my brother. didn’t mean we stopped loving his soon to be ex. we just stopped thinking about her for awhile. guess we figured her family was doing what we we’re all doing. hoping today’s & future families can figure out a better way. me, i never understood how any 2 people who once loved so much, could come to hate so much.
