In a revelation shaking up the Democratic establishment, former Congressman Dean Phillips has suggested that Joe Biden’s dramatic cancer diagnosis may have been strategically timed to deflect mounting criticism over his age, health, and ability to serve another term.

Phillips, who mounted an underdog primary challenge against Biden in 2024, didn’t mince words. “I don’t think it’s coincidental that this was announced this week,” he told The New York Times. “It’s hard to interpret it any other way.”

His comments come on the heels of a political firestorm ignited by Biden’s disclosure that he has aggressive, metastatic prostate cancer—a detail that surfaced just as public scrutiny of the 82-year-old’s mental and physical fitness reached a fever pitch.

The cancer revelation follows days of fallout from Original Sin, a new book by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’ Alex Thompson. The book alleges Biden’s aides worried he’d need a wheelchair after traveling and tried to conceal just how frail he had become. That image was reinforced when Axios dropped a 2023 interview recording between Biden and Special Counsel Robert Hur, in which the former president fumbled through his responses and struggled with basic recollection.

“I don’t think the timing is an accident,” Phillips repeated. “The people around Joe Biden were clearly hiding the truth from the public. That’s more disturbing to me than Trump being openly corrupt.”

Phillips isn’t the only one raising eyebrows. MAGA world erupted after the diagnosis was made public, with Trump loyalists openly accusing the Biden camp of orchestrating a cover-up.

“Stage nine? That’s a long way to go without telling the American people anything,” President Donald Trump said Monday in a tongue-in-cheek jab at the situation. (There is no official “stage nine” cancer. Biden’s cancer was classified as Grade Group 5—highly aggressive—on the Gleason Scale, specific to prostate cancer.)

Donald Trump Jr. piled on, writing on X: “What I want to know is how did Dr. Jill Biden miss stage five metastatic cancer—or is this yet another cover-up???”

Experts Say It’s Possible—But Rare

Some medical professionals are cautioning against political overreaction. “It could be that his prostate cancer was simply very aggressive and developed fast,” said Dr. Russell Pachynski, an oncologist at Washington University in St. Louis. He noted that men over 70 are typically not advised to undergo regular prostate screenings.

According to the CDC, PSA (prostate-specific antigen) tests become less routine after age 70 because of the risks of overtreatment and the slower progression of most prostate cancers. However, Biden’s case—clearly not typical—raises tough questions about who knew what, and when.
